    The teenager went out for a cigarette, around the same time Jane Tanner said she saw a man carrying a child. She only mentioned what she saw to her family latter, because she had also to confess the reason why she was there. Since the beginning, Police had some doubts about Jane Tanner [sic] statement, as Jeremy Wilkins, a tennis partner of Madeleine’s father, told them he only saw Gerry McCann near the apartment.

Sorry to bump this, but it is referred to in another active topic today.

First, the report comes from 2007 and the source is Anorak.  Caveat emptor.

Second, there are no windows in the stairwell from which one can observe 5A.  The windows all point north.

Third, Aoife was in Estrela da Luz.  Block 6 is hundreds of metres away.  She was not the teenager smoking.

Fourth, block 6 does not have communal balconies,  The stairwells (2) each open onto 2 flats.  The ground floor is #4 and #5.  The level above is #8 and #9.  I am only guessing about the top floor, but my guess would be #12 and #13.

The front (access via stairwells) is not a great place to loiter, unless you are renting the flat in question.  If you are in #8 and leaving a pile of butts outside #9, you are likely to attract attention from #9.

So, was a flat in block 6 rented by the Irish family who returned to Portugal to give evidence?  The ones who had a flat in Estrela de Luz?  As reported by Anorak?  This one is going into my red herrings category.  It is up to you what you do with it.

It also looks as if the Tanner sighting was causing consternation somewhere as one way or another the effort was certainly being made to deflect attention from it.

How could it have been Aoife if the teenager allegedly witnessed JW & GM conversing together? Aoife was in the Dolphin at that time. Secondly, the report said father & daughter had been in Portugal recently to give statements & help with a reconstruction, yet Martin & Aoife went to Portugal way back in late May.
IMO this was an attempt at a 2 fold deflection - firstly away from Tannerman & secondly to provide an explanation for the cigarette butts on the balcony. Whilst Graham MacKenzie may not have made an official statement until Dec 2007, he did contact Crimestoppers with  information on 16/9/2007. A careful look at the copy of that report in the files shows that it appears to have had the bottom part chopped off - possibly the piece about the cigarette butts?
