So anonymity does not apply under all circunstances.

OK - lets look at a slightly more difficult one.   Suppose someone libelled you online.  Accused you of some criminal act.  Would you be entitled to obtain their details?

That is up to the Police.

Unless you believe in vigil[ censored word]m. Do you aspire to that ?

Why should I want to ? I couldn't afford to fight a libel case - I don't have a fund of public donations.

It would be a civil law matter - why would the police be involved?

Define civil matter ?

That is a common get out clause.

Rubbish.  Define civil matter?  A matter which comes under the civil law.  Say... Defamation.

I was assuming that, in theory, you have a reputation you may wish to protect.  I apologise unreservedly.

Reputation counts for little when litigation is beyond ones reach.  You live in a fantasy world if you think otherwise.

Sorry, but you are wrong on that.

I have seen cases which initially were called 'civil cases' by the police ,but after referral to a Police Commissioner the decisions were 'reversed'.

Very few, and in this context usually where it spills over into harrasment.

As usual, you are trying to deflect the argument.

Confining this to cases of defamation - a civil law matter - do you think you should be entitled to find out the identity of the person defaming you online?

Yet again, when you get a difficult question, out comes the  term 'deflect the argument', or the equivalent.

Classic McCann supporter mantra.

Same old tactics and still boring..

Why do you wish to confine this to 'defamation'  ?

Merely as an example of an area where

(a) The complaint could originate on the internet
(b) where it is clearly a civil matter, and the police would not be involved.

I am interested in your view that people have an unassailable right to anonymity online, and suggesting that this is wrong.

Yes you would be entitled but it requires a Court Order.

A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.
