The point is that if there was a specific law, all cases  that broke it would go to court.

Are you sure about that? Doesn't the CPS consider "public interest" before deciding on prosecution?

It might be at present - doesn't mean that it always has to be or  always will be. Rules get changed at the whim of politicians.

Perhaps the issue of babysitters might be worth consideration - there have been a number of nasty cases where children have been harmed by their childminder.
No doubt if you were running a professional babysitting service, you would need to be vetted.

unfortunately far more than those hurt by being left alone for a short period

Does that matter ? A law could be all inclusive and cover a number of issues.

It would be a minefield of extenuating circumstances.  And it would never get through Parliament.

Yes, I have no problem with that.

Back when I was a typically broke student, I sometimes babysat as a resut of ads in the papers.

In one instance, I turned up and was given a 5-minute explanation of the child's evening routine and a phone number in the event of an emergency (and this was before mobile phones).

I knew that I was totally trustworthy and responsible, but the child's parent didn't know me from Adam.

By the time I had finished with The Daily Mail they would be begging for Parliament to mind it's own business.

Although there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest this may have been the case at PdL  - there have been cases of paedaphiles working at nurseries.   The Vanessa George case is just one example.

The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.
