As Jassi has pointed out it is an air rifle. He appears to be carrying it cradled in his arms.
It could hurt or kill someone under the right circumstances. But to paraphrase Charlie Bronson in The Magnificent Seven if you want to be sure of wounding someone with it hold the barrel and use it as a club!

I wonder what the "sceptic" view would be if Gerry McCann had lashed out at a cameraman after being questioned by the police, or greeted journos on his doorstep carrying a rifle, or even a Nerf gun...?

How about commenting on Prince Andrew "decorating" a load of photographers using a paint spray gun at an exhibition all those years ago?
All very interesting but that's about all. I don't see any of it adding anything constructive to solving the mystery do you?
