A number of reasons,    as an escape route if caught in the apartment [the burglar escaped through the window in Mrs. Fenn's]    To distract from the fact this person had a key to the apartment [the police would think he/she got in through the window,   or to dispel  any smell from a drug used to sedate Madeleine.

If the window was open already ( I can't see the burglar taking time to open it in his desperate bid to escape ) then in Mrs Fenn's case that is more likely than not how he got in.

What do you mean 'if the window was open already'    I meant that the man/woman opened the window after coming in through the door,  as maybe a way of escape if caught in the apartment,   if this person was taken by surprise in the bedroom,  then the window would be a likely way of getting out wouldn't it?

At page 884 and the following, it was added the lophoscopy [study of fingerprints] report where only finger traces of KATE HEALY were found, namely on the window’s frame who would have been opened at the time of the disappearance.
