So far so good; this appears to be about the charity being defamed and defending itself, not about a trustee using charity funds to bring a private action for defamation on his/her own behalf.
No matter this is going nowhere.
The crux is "If you hand over money to a "begging bowl" what right do you really expect to have to dictate how the money is spent and accounted for after you have handed it over"?
Me ? None; that's why I don't give to begging bowls. Begging bowls are usually rifled one way or another by those with an eye to the main chance, that's life. Remember how East African port charges increased in the wake of Live Aid 30 years ago? Perhaps you don't but they did. No prizes for guessing why.

Well said Alice. Amaral, may or may not be a nice person, his personality is not going to be scrutinized. The issue to support Amaral, and others in his position, is to be allowed to express his freedom of expression.

This is a fundamental right of every citizen in the EU. I never read his book, I don't know if it is good or bad, but I support his right to write it !!  Team McCann were on a power trip with this one, and deserve to lose it. They played right into Amarals hands!

I support the McCanns right..enshrined in EU law to sue for defamation and any damages the court sees fit

Absolute freedom of expression is NOT enshrined in EU law

It is within the Human Rights act.
There is no issue with Team McCann wanting untrue things written about them removed. ALL they had to do was request AMARAL remove those parts from the book, I am sure he would have agreed, rather than face a libel trial,However, that is not what happened, and as it turned out it was all about Money.

I find that repulsive.

Goncalo Amaral isn't averse to trying to curb the freedom of expression of others as his defamation action against Leonor Cipriano's lawyer Marcos Aragão Correia  and university professor António Pedro Dores would appear to indicate.

He took legal action after failing to have Correia committed to a mental institution.

Goncalo Amaral lost the case and had to pay court costs as a result.

However, just another example of the double standards employed in all things Amaral, illustrated by the pejorative attitude to the Find Madeleine Fund and the Goncalo Amaral fund which can do no wrong.
Seems it is OK for Goncalo Amaral to attempt to curb freedom of expression ... but shock horror when the Drs McCann are forced to defend their reputations.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

Has anyone on this forum actually written to the managers of Dr Amaral's fund to request a copy of the accounts only to have their request declined?
That is flatly declined rather than a "well yes but it will cost you 50 euros squire".

According to my understanding there is no formal structure involved as it is merely a donation site.

How would I know?
I assume the professional Googlers on this site will turn it up in no time flat.
My point was unless someone has tried to obtain the accounts and been told "p**s of Sooty" or had been completely unable to find a way in, then any remark about transparency or lack of is a little unconvincing.
On a personal level I don't give a monkeys if both funds are spent on fast women and slow horses.

no interest but you seem to have a background in accountancy....his fund would be a very good way to launder money
