The comments section in the DM is often moderated so is not a true reflection of the public view.

The more extreme comments are certainly moderated, no doubt.

However, the recent article was not exactly supportive of the mccanns.

It appears that no-one has seen any negative comments on either the findmadeleine# or the findben#. Reading the newspapers they are hinting that Ben's twitter account was blocked because Kerry Needham spoke about the difference between the money spent on Madeleine and on other missing children.

Tension has been building between the two missing persons campaigns in recent weeks, after Kerry Needham, whose son Ben vanished 24 years ago in Greece, questioned the huge sum of police money spent on the search for missing Madeleine McCann.

The fact that Kerry has commented on the difference between the money spent on the two cases is very old news and something the McCanns - along with the rest us - will have been aware of for years.  So to suggest that as a reason is a non starter IMO.

Quite. The overall public opinion of the McCanns (as expressed in the DM and other media) may be far worse than that published.

Trolling of the McCanns has been going on for years too, allegedly, so why the sudden furore?  Kerry Needham was interviewed by Closer, the magazine which also polled it's readers asking if the Met funding should continue.

"Of course I want Madeleine to be found safe and well, but why do the “McCanns get more help than the rest of the families with missing children? It’s unfair.”

Kerry: "It's unfair that so much has been spent on Maddie - but not on other missing children"
Emily Cope By Emily Cope Junior Feature Writer
Monday 14 September 2015

Last week it was revealed that the search for missing Madeleine McCann has cost taxpayers almost £11million - prompting a senior police union leader to call for the case to be closed.

For eight years now Gerry and Kate McCann have fought tirelessly to find Maddie, who disappeared from her family's holiday in Portugal's Praia da Luz in May 2007

Thirty-one police and support staff are still trying to find Maddie but in the four years since the beginning of the investigation ordered by PM David Cameron, no arrests have been made.

Although Maddie's is one of the most high-profile cases, each year 140,000 children go missing - and one per cent of cses remain unsolved after a year.

Here we ask Kerry Needham, whose son Ben disappeared 20 years in Kos, Greece, for her views

In July 1991 toddler Ben Needham vanished outside a farmhouse his grandparents were renovating on the Greek island of Kos, while his mum Kerry was at work.

His family combed the countryside for the 20-month-old but, tragically, he was never found.

Despite Kerry pleading with the Government for more help, less than £800,000 has been spent so far – just a fraction of the £11m used in the search for missing Maddie.

Now, 24 years on, Kerry Needham, 43, says she’ll never give up looking for Ben and thinks it’s unfair the McCann’s have received so much money, compared to other missing children investigations.

She adds: “My heart goes out to the McCann’s, having a child go missing is an indescribable pain. There is no closure and you miss them everyday.

“But I don’t understand why the McCann’s have received so much - £11m is unprecedented.
The McCann's have been searching for Maddie since 2007
The McCann's have been searching for Maddie since 2007

"It seems unfair when other missing children aren’t getting as much attention and money.

I’ve come up against so much resistance from the Home Office when I’ve asked for help finding Ben.

“I understand that Kate and Gerry will never want to give up searching for Maddie but there have been no arrests and there don't seem to be any leads.

"It seems the police have done all they can - which isn't the case with Ben.

"There is still hope for Ben. Even this year, police have uncovered information that has led to new lines of enquiry."

At the time of Ben's disappearance, Kerry says she received no help from the Government.

She recalls: “No one from the British Embassy came to meet me and no British police were flown to Kos.

"It wasn’t until 2011 that British police finally sent officers out. The South Yorkshire police did help when we returned home, but we had no funding from the Government. If there was a lead I’d fly out myself with money I’d raised through campaigning.

“When Maddie went missing, British police were flown out within two days.

“The government simply wouldn’t be able to afford to spend £11m in every missing child case, there should be a certain amount attributed to each case depending on how many leads there are.

“We’ve received less than £800,000 from the government, and most of that was given to us this February after a lengthy appeal to investigate leads previously ignored by Greek Police.

"We’ve done most of the work ourselves with the help of the public.

"Of course I want Madeleine to be found safe and well, but why do the “McCanns get more help than the rest of the families with missing children? It’s unfair.”

Why shouldn't the comments section of the Mail for example, be a good cross section of public opinion ?

it isn't a forum, and intended for general readership.

I can guarantee if the comments were supportive of the mccanns, you would be gloating.

I never gloat Stephen. - so wrong again.

IMO a large number of the comments come from the same people on every occasion.  i.e people who spend their time abusing the McCanns on their own forums - and who all swoop like vultures to continue their h.a.t.e campaign in the comments section of newspapers.       If that's not the case - why do they feel the need to spread the word - urging their fellow sceptics to go and leave a comment?

In the PR war being waged by the McCanns all that does matter is what the GBP can be made to believe.

Unfortunately they miscalculated the consequences this time.
The GBP is not as stupid as you, from your lofty perch, care to believe.   Most of the most popular comments on the Mail site for example make no mention of the twitter troll spat but of the perceived unfairness between police efforts for Madeleine and Ben.

You really don't get it, do you.

Most people are tired of hearing about the mccanns doing the 'poor us' act.

What even makes you think many people even believe the mccanns story of abduction ?

All they can see, is a lot of money that could be spent elsewhere far more productively, going down the drain, with no results to show for it.

So do I - she blames the authorities for their lack of action/support  both at the time and since Ben's disappearance.   She does not blame the McCanns - who she sympathises with completely.  She doesn't begrudge them a penny, she just wants the same for her own case - and who could blame her for that.

Ben's case is now being looked at again by our police -  and IMO there should be no ceiling on the amount of money required to fully investigate his case.   I have no doubt that the McCanns feel the same.

OK Benice.

How many missing people are there in the UK ?

Now multiply that number by £11,000,000 and see what you get. 8(0(*

You talk as if they are making public appearances every day.     We've hardly heard a peep out of them for months.   The comments they have made have been about the present enquiry - saying they are pleased and grateful for SY's efforts.

Where is your evidence of a 'poor me' act and also your evidence that the GBP are tired of it?

The floor is yours - so let's hear it.
