Luz 2009 Streetview has gone
« on: October 07, 2015, 01:24:30 PM »
The Aug 2009 version of Streetview for Luz has been replaced by a version taken in Feb 2015.  This makes it nearly 8 years out of date re Madeleine's disappearance.

The Luz map has been updated.  Some establishments which existed at the time but have ceased trading have been removed.  Some which were not trading at the time have been added.

The streets mapped by Google seem to have changed too, with some gains and some losses.  For example, it is now possible to explore down the front of the church to the Fortaleza and then along to the start of the promenade.

Obviously, there has been a turnover of establishments.  On my blog, the example I took was the Cave Bar, (definitely open in May 2007), which became Jake's Restaurant, which in turn became Rio's.  The one appearing in the Feb 2015 version is Rio's, though that has closed recently.

I would have thought Streetview of Aug 2009 was valuable to Operation Grange.  Of course, this could be wrong.  Or it could be that everything they want has been secured already, or that they can regain access to the 2009 version.

I have tried digging the old version out of the Wayback Machine, without success.  If anyone can do better, please let us know.

All in all, it would appear that any copies of the Aug 2009 scenes that have been secured by armchair detectives may have increased in worth as a result of this change.  So look after any you might have in your files.

It is a great resource. However I think you are overestimating OG if you imagine they have studied the streets of 2007 as much as some armchair detectives have.
BTW if you stand at junction of R 1 Maio and R Cemiterio you get 2015 streetview and R Cemiterio is closed due to roadworks so the camera van in 2015 could not go along there. But if you go walk along R Cemiterio, streetview switches to 2014 images (before the 2015 roadworks). BTW there is a well visible from road here although on private land.

Actually none of the Streetview images have been removed from the site.

At the top left of the streetview image you should see the following kind of box.

Click on the little clock and you will see a new small image with a slider bar beneath.

The dots on the slider bar relate to the versions of streetview available.

In much of Europe there are two or three options. Sometimes, in other parts of the world particularly, there are no alternative versions. If there is no clock showing there are no alternatives.

If you drag the slider to an alternative place on the bar then the image in the small screen will change to the date you choose. Clicking on the small screen image will then change the large screen image as well.

You can go from one to the other at will.
