Jeremy Bamber pal Brett Collins and his career in crime.

Brett Collins has recently been made bankrupt in New Zealand in connection with low level criminal activity over the last few years - it is alleged he made about £200,000 or more from these activities.

Collins formerly of 3 Kuaka Road, Oneroa, Waiheke Island was convicted of trading illegally under the name Bretts Bargains as an unregistered vehicle dealer and was fined a record $30,000 following his fifth conviction in eight years.

The 61-year-old Waiheke Island man, Brett Eric Collins, was convicted in the Auckland District Court of unregistered trading in motor vehicles.

He sold eight vehicles in 12 months, which exceeded the limit of six allowed under the Motor Vehicle Sales Act.

The $30,000 fine last month was the largest imposed under the act, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said.

Fines for unregistered vehicle trading usually average about $4600.

Ministry registries integrity and enforcement team manager Karla Flood said the heavy penalty reflected the fact this was the man's fifth conviction since 2006 for the same offence.

"This defendant continued to sell motor vehicles for several years, despite several previous convictions for selling motor vehicles without being registered," she said.

Collins was made bankrupt because of not paying his multiple fines.
He is second on the list of bankruptcies here :

Seperate reports from a New Zealand official relating to this type of offence state that many such traders make so much money from this that they look on the very large fines as just a cost of doing business and pay the fines every time.

Scenario:

Cop pulls guy over for speeding.  Cop says "license and registration". Man relies I don't have a license. Charges the guy with driving without a license. Man is fined and punished by being told he can't apply for a license for 2 years.

What are the odds the man learned his lesson and will wait until he can finally get a valid license to drive again?

Telling him he can't get a valid license is not going to stop him he already proved he doesn't care whether he has a license or not.

It's like expecting a prostitute to stop turning tricks just because she gets arrested.  She already knew it was against the law and is going to go right back to it.

Clearly Brett Collins doesn't care whether he is permitted to sell them or not. I don't know how he will be able to buy any cars to sell though if he is penniless. That is about the only way to stop him short of locking him up.

I would be very careful about this, there are at least five people in New Zealand called Brett Collins that could be the one associated with the case.

The others don't have the middle name of Eric though.

I think in CAL's book she referred to BC having a brother in the motor trade. I assume this was around 85/86.

I don't really see the connection with the case/JB?

If it's illegal it's illegal but IMO there's a fine line between what's illegal and unethical/immoral behaviour:

- MP's fiddling their expenses to the tune of 000's
- Very wealthy individuals and institutions transferring cash overseas to avoid paying tax
- Banks flogging useless investment products to unsuspecting retail customers and institutions which benefit no one others than those incentivised to flog them
- The likes of Sir Phillip Green taking millions out of BHS by way of dividend payments paid to his wife, Lady Green, in Monaco, a tax haven, at the same time leaving the employees pension fund with a huge deficit which as owner he was responsible for funding.
- Senior management at large financial institutions behaving irresponsibly and recklessly for personal financial gain and to sayisfy huge egos causing the global financial system to collapse had governments not intervened
- The lazy and feckless milking the welfare system

Are any of the above any more or less likely to become involved in serious violent criminal acts?
Just my opinion of course but Jeremy Bamber is innocent and a couple from UK, unknown to T9, abducted Madeleine McCann - motive unknown.  Was J J murdered as a result of identifying as a goth?
