Was Calpol suspension licensed in Portugal in 2007?

You're a bit late, I've already posted that article on page 5 of this thread.

So according to the Police who arrested the couple , Calpol was illegal.

Another reminder, Calpol is not just Paracetamol, it does have other 'ingredients'

strawberry ‘flavouring’ & carmoisine  produce its pink colour. (Chemical compound E122- suspected carcinogen, banned in Austria, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the US and not recommended for consumption by children) .

the paraben preservatives methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218 - suspected hormone disruptor and allergen. Banned in France and Australia) and E122. Note that both these substances have been linked to hyperactivity, and the Hyperactive Children’s Support Group identifies them as likely causes of mysterious and sudden cases of ADHD-like hyperactivity. They too say these substances are not recommended to be consumed by children.

Maltitol (a mild laxative)

Glycerol (E422 - large quantities can cause headaches, thirst and nausea)

Sorbitol (E420 - There are no limits to the intake of E420; however, its use is actually prohibited for infants younger than 1 year of age, as it may cause severe diarrhoea)

Propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216 - suspected hormone disruptor and allergen. Not recommended for consumption by children . Possible contact allergen. Not permitted for use in France or Australia)

Ethyl parahydroxybenzoate (E214 - suspected hormone disruptor, banned in France and Australia. Not recommended for consumption by children)

A thickener – xanthan gum (E415- no known adverse effects)

I didn't say they'd been arrested for using Calpol. The police did say the drug was illegal. You need to learn to read.

‘The police saw the bottle and said that it was an “illegal drug in Portugal” and  they were taking her to hospital for tests to see if we had sedated her. They were very brusque and had guns.’

There is no evidence calpol is illegal in Portugal.

The McCanns freely told the PJ they took calpol with them on the holiday ...

No murmer from the PJ (at least about that). 

Probably because calpol is not illegal in Portugal.

Not even Amaral claimed as such in his book.

excess doses are dangerous but NOT fatal. In the early days there was a consultant paediatrician on TV who said that it would be basically impossible for a child to take a fatal dose of calpol as the child would vomit. It would take several bottles. Poisoning from paracetamol takes around 3 days to kill due to progressive liver failure....calpol can be ruled out

Answer: calpol comes in liquid form (for children).

Whether calpol (paracetamol in liquid form) was specifically licensed in Portugal I have no idea.  But paracetamol for children certainly was (and is)

a paracetemol overdose can lead to liver  faliure and it can take days to kill you

That's because you can take lots of tablets
It's very easy
A child can't drink a pint of calpol
They would get sick
That's why lots of adults have died from tablets but I haven't found any from calpol liquid

its called Calpol Infant Suspension....NOT colloid

The bottom line is that, whatever the correct chemical term is, it was (is?) deemed to be a pleasant-tasting, discomfort-soothing, liquid for children.

There are no doubt other brands of similar analgesics in a palatable form for children on the market, also aimed at parents. But that's neither here, nor there.
