I didn't think it was Carana.

If it was banned , the link I gave yesterday could well explain why. Some of the ingredients in Calpol have been banned in other countries.

Yes, I saw that. There's some controversy over E122, apparently.

Good grief.

The upshot is that calpol was, is, and has always been, licensed for sale in Portugal.

How many pages did it take us to get there?

The license appears to have been revoked in 2008 (according to Merc's link)... why, no idea.

Whatever the situation concerning that particular product... I still can't see any connection of any potential relevance.

The [ censored word ] community will, no doubt.

The censored word was related to conspiracy theorists, in case anyone was wondering...

Straying off topic, slightly, but not necessarily in view of the topic of Calpol ... I really had no idea that UK confectionery was such a serious dispute in EU politics.

Since its anti-climatic birth, the EU has provided consistent background noise of Tory party discontent. Disputes have spanned topics ranging from agricultural policy to economic skullduggery and, most contentiously, chocolate. In 2000, MEPs finally voted to allow British chocolate to be sold on European soil, ending a 27-year dispute over cocoa content.

Well spotted.  8((()*/

Back to square one, then.

I still can't see what the issue on this topic is about... The family could have packed a tube of toothpaste that wasn't on sale in PT at the time.

That was revoked in March 2008 according to

https://myhealthbox.eu/pt/medicamento/calpol/1403650

Thanks mercury, that was what I was looking for, the Calpol licence was revoked by the Portuguese authorities on 11th March 2008.

It would be interesting to know if the McCann case had some bearing on this decision.

In conclusion therefore, according to the record's, Calpol was licensed for distribution and sale in Portugal from 3rd May 2007 until 11th March 2008.

A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

How could it possibly?  Was there any relevance between Calpol and Madeleine's disappearance??

That my friend is the $50m question.

Seems SiL was partly correct in what she stated at the outset, Calpol was unlicenced up until 3/5/2007, was also unlicensed in 2015 and still is today.  I fear that far from her offering an apology for being wrong it is she who should be receiving an apology from the member who has posted several times that Calpol is not illegal in Portugal.

You really think your question is worth that much?  How about - it had absolutely nothing to do with the McCann case, unless the PT authorities who make these decisions are basing their decisions on rumour, misinformation, illogical thought processes and downright stupidity?

Calpol is not illegal in Portugal.  If it were, then people in possession of Calpol would face charges and punishment - do they?

This is a list of drugs and the maximum amount you can be in possession of without facing charges in Portugal.  Note, paracetamol, or Calpol is not on the list.  Presumably that's because it's not classed as an illegal drug!

Amount limits[edit]
Amount limits of possession for personal consumption are:[23]

2 g Cannabis (herb)
10 g Opium
2g Hashish
2.5 g Cannabis Oil
2 g Cocaine (Hydrochloride)
2 g Morphine
1 g MDMA
1 g Heroin
1 g Methadone
1 g Amphetamine
0.5 g Pure THC
0.3 g Cocaine (Benzoylecgonine)
0.1 g PCP
500 µg LSD

I'm still lost as to the interest of this thread.

OP: Calpol was illegal in Portugal in 2007 in the McCann case and illegal in Portugal in the Irish case in 2015.

It wasn't "illegal" in May 2007. It simply wasn't on sale in PT at that time (whether or not it ever was).

What exactly does "illegal" mean?

For some reason, the sales authorisation appears to have been "revoked" in 2008 (but Merc's link concerns a higher dosage, thanks to Davel for spotting that).

It's not clear what exactly "revoked" actually means in this context.

Was it considered to be a dangerous substance (and therefore banned)?  Was the higher dosage as per Merc's link the issue? Or is it one of those situations in which getting anything launched requires.... erm, a helping hand (as in a license not being renewed)?
