If we had any journalists in the UK one of them might have thought to ask her what, in her expert opinion, could have produced the effect which she witnessed.

The difficulty with this is the number of cases or news stories a journalist deals with, the percentage of time one journo spends on the Madeleine McCann case (and so knowledge thereof), and the timing of when such suspicions or issues you refer to became public.

Luz tour #3 has just completed, and together with my visitor, who knows the McCann case in considerable depth, we were able to cover quite a few bases pertinent to the incident.

One of these relates to the recent 'news' by Antonella Lazzeri about the activities of Clement Freud in Luz, his watering holes and his drinking buddies.  There is obviously some intelligence re the case behind this news article, and some initiative, but IMO the approach was more 'let's get a ripping yarn or two' than 'let's do some serious investigative journalism'.  And that seems to be a general problem, IMO.  Good story rather than hard digging for detail.

Perhaps we should have a thread entitled 'questions a serious journalist should investigate'.  That sounds a bit wish-washy and a bit broad brush, but I hope you get my meaning.

It begs the question as to whether collectively we have a connection to a decent investigative journalist or two, given that some of us have the time to study the case in detail (which journalists don't) and can therefore dish up pertinent questions on a plate.

Back to Calpol, we did get confirmation from a resident in Portugal that Calpol24 became available from 3 May 2007, but not clarification as to whether Calpol50 was on the go before then.
What's up, old man?

i think its far more likely that investigative journalists don't believe there is anything for them to find in this case and the authorities are doing all that is possible

Amaral mentions the McCann's had Calpol with them,   no mention that it was illegal for them to take it to Portugal.

Because it wasn't and still isn't.  The marketing of an unlicenced pharmaceutical is illegal however.

Posting comments that a product is legal without clarifying when it was legal and if it is still legal are unhelpful.

I think whether Calpol Night was available to the general public in May 2007 is a moot point. GPs are given all sorts of drugs by pharmaceutical company reps many months before they are available to the general public. Therefore it is quite possible that the McCanns had access to the pharmaceutical in May 2007. That  is not to say it was used to sedate the children but it is certainly a possibility.

Sorry Angelo222,  what do you mean?

I did not say a product was legal or not I said that Amaral didn't say anything about the Calpol being illegal.

I am sure if Calpol was illegal in Portugal in 2007 Amaral would have jumped at it.

In my opinion he got confused with Calpol Night which helped children sleep which was on the market in the September of 2007,  but has now been recalled.

Idle tittle-tattle that the "nefarious McCanns" did something heinous with drugs (to their loved, and cherished daughter, Madeleine) is meat-and-drink to purveyors of malicious gossip, with a vested interest in denigration and traducement.

Having read the recent posts I am at  a loss to find who these gossipers are. We are discussing Kate suspecting her children were drugged- she doesn't elaborate as to what drugs could have been used. being a qualified Anesthetist some find that strange. but anyway it is a discussion forum afterall.

Theother day I found a link to a medical site whichsaid calpols licence was revoked....and he said it was probably "contrived"

 @)(++(*

I never got a chance to respond as his post was deleted as I was typng a reply

So sad, never got a chance to ask if he thought I/me persnally had forged it or amaral or some other evil beng pmsl

it was calpol 50 that had its licence revoked according to your post ...not calpol 24 which would mean calpol 24 still has its license

So are you saying that the McCann's could have had Calpol Night with them as well as the ordinary Calpol?   If so why on earth take the ordinary Calpol why not just take Calpol Night with them?

Added to say,   and why would that be so bad showing up in Madeleine's blood?

If they had found her after a fall they could easily have said she had fallen when they were there,  why hide that they had given her Calpol?

I'm not saying they had Calpol Night with them I'm saying as Kate was a GP she may have had access to the product prior to public release. As to why she would take the ordinary Calpol rather than the Capol Night did she specify which Calpol she took?

Calpol is a brand name which contains paracetamol, over use to medicate, for minor pain in children, is frowned upon due to accidental overdosing my parents (not resulting in death, that I am aware of), it is also addictive if used too often, just the same as adult paracetomol tablets. In Scotland Drs cannot prescribe calopol anymore. If a child is teething parents go to neareest chemist and get dated pain relief which is minimal dosage to prevent accidental overdose. I did take calpol on holiday when my children were teething also bonjella. I will stress that I do not believe Kate or Gerry overdosed calpol with any of their children. It is too difficult to measure effect on sleeping children e.g when it will wear off etc. That's not to say the children were or were not drugged by some other substance.

No stats, but pharma did ply many luxury good and jaunts abroad and cash at Doctors especially Phychiatrist/phychologists to sell, prescribe and push  their drugs. It was clamped down on, and is now frowned upon, it may still go on, but Faith is correct, drug companies would offer'trials' to Psychiatrists who would then recommend purchasing for the NHS patients, after offering a report on how well their treatment was working, after using on their patients with consent- sometimes without I was told a few years ago!

Why would any parent give a child a dose of Calpol shortly before bedtime?

As far as I can tell, we now have two reasons on the table.  One, to reduce the child's temperature, in order that the child can sleep.  Two, to reduce the child's pain, in order that the child can sleep.

I note you are back on the assertions bit again.  'The idea is absurd', with nothing to support it.

So do parents give children Calpol before bedtime, to help them sleep?

Not when they (parents) use the drug properly.

Calpol takes away pain.

That's its designated and intended purpose.

An incidental, and beneficial spin-off (of taking away pain) is that those free of pain sleep better than those in pain (children and adults alike).

Hence the myth that calpol has a 'sedative' affect.

Calpol doesn't
