How many of the families had baby monitors with them?
« on: September 18, 2016, 05:36:04 AM »
I know the Paynes had a baby monitor but did any of the others?  In my research on Russell and Matt, Russell mentions that they also had a monitoring device but it isn't often mention.  Was this for real?

"I don't know the working range of the Payne's baby monitor, but I suspect it to would fail at much over 100m, due to obstacles in the way."

Thread titled " The Paynes used a baby monitor so was this accepted practice?"  No mention about Russell or Jane's baby monitor.

"The Paynes were on the floor above, the only couple with a functioning baby monitor. Russell O’Brien and Jane Tanner had brought a monitor too, but theirs wasn’t getting much of a signal from the Tapas restaurant 50 yards away."

http://miscarriageofjustice.co/index.php?topic=7285.msg335482#msg335482
"The Paynes had a baby monitor that worked at the relevant distance.  One lot of other parents had a baby monitor they did not trust.  Two of the families do not appear to have attempted a baby monitor."

But does Jane confirm this?

http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/JANE-TANNER.htm  "JANE TANNER'S STATEMENT 04 MAY 2008"  no mention of their baby monitor.

JANE TANNER STATEMENT 10 MAY 2007 Maybe this is the best the interpreter could make out of it?

JT also mentioned that the Paynes had a radio monitoring system. So they did not have to leave the table to check their children.
Did she mention her own one????

Jane gets my big tick once again.

JANE TANNER ROGATORY INTERVIEW WITH DC FERGUSON
http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/TRANSLATIONS.htm
Quote
4078    “Okay, since it was the first time, if you take your mind back to the first time you went there, what had happened before you went, how had the, you know, while driving that it, what were the arrangements for the children before you went?”
Reply    “Yeah, well this is where I worry that I alerted somebody to maybe what we were doing because I actually went down, before we went down I went down with my monitor to check if it was working because Dave and Fi had a monitor which was quite a good one, a very high spec monitor, whereas ours wasn’t such high spec so I was worried that it wouldn’t work in the Tapas bar.”
4078    “Wasn’t the cups and string was it.”
Reply    “Not quite that bad err so I actually did before we went down to eat err we actually, I actually went down, just stood in the restaurant with the monitor just to check that it did and it was on the edge of its, you know, it worked but not, I wasn’t completely confident in, totally confident in it. So as I say looking back on it now you think oh, I did that, could that have actually shown somebody what we were doing, you know, me standing there like an idiot with my bloody monitor, you know, that sort of, that has crossed my mind since but I think we decided before we went, one of the attractions of a Mark Warner holiday was the baby listening service that they normally offer.”

and later

Quote
4078    “And your judgement at the time you considered that you’d be able to cover the, you checking on the children from the proximity of the restaurant?”
Reply    “Yeah, yeah.”
4078    “And you felt okay with what…”
Reply    “I think with that plus the monitor that we had I think we just thought yes it’s fine and I think you know your own children, again, we were proved wrong because Evie did wake up but they tend to, they sleep well, if they wake up it tends to be in the middle of the night, not early on, you know. And things like that you just, we were just weighing it up and it seemed a reasonable risk, well I did think of it as a reasonable risk then it just, we thought it would be fine.”
4078    “Because I know, I mean so many things are different with hindsight.”

And more I have no doubt that Jane and Russell also had a baby monitor.

" I have no doubt that Jane and Russell also had a baby monitor."  Everything I check up on about Jane it seems to be backed by evidence.  She is often portrayed as a liar but I don't have that opinion at all.
This thread was confirming that.

Again I ask, what relevance?  What does it matter who had a baby monitor??

The general opinion was that only the Payne's had a monitor and I was surprised to read that Russell said they had one.  It was news to me. But there were two families that used baby monitors. Whether that is relevant or not I'm not sure but IMO the thread had finished.  Delete the thread if you like, it has served its purpose.

I think it is quite important cos everyone except the Paynes has been knocked because of their listening routine ... especially poor old Kate and Gerry.

As one of the statements above said Janes monitor didn't work very well over the distance.

So what good would they have been generally ? I wonder

It seems they preferred actual checks ... although in one of Russells statements, it appears that he listened at the window at least once, as Matt had once.

The Mccanns did go into the apartment and check the children.

I'm sure a well travelled lady like yourself is well aware of how noisy it is in tapas restaurants Sadie.  Was a baby monitor of any real use in such circumstances?

This is not like a normal Spanish tapas, Angelo, which can be akin to the bar of a British pub.  And where people (often) share numerous little tastes of food

This is a formal restaurant with quite well spaced tables, as I remember it.  It had diners that seem to be of the refined type, mainly professional ... and professionals enjoy themselves but generally in  a much quieter way than someone at a tapas restaurant/bar would probably.

I think that one had to go into the seperate tapas bar next door to have a tapas meal

I have little doubt that a baby monitor would be heard if it was a good one and capable of such distances.  Seems David and Fionas worked well but Janes had glitches.
