The Met would have to be careful of not allowing the perpetrator access to important information.  Information released to Kate could fall into the wrong hands over time.

Well of course. Forget the checks and balances and laws of two countries. Why not allow the relatives in any unsolved case to have all the evidence gathered by the authorities so they can all investigate the cases for themselves? If witnesses are harassed, identified or questioned by those with no legal right to do so it doesn't matter at all, does it? These people have the right to conduct their own investigations of the police stop doing it!!

I'm so sorry. You seem to know more about sceptic mantras than I, a person labelled 'sceptic' do.  Speaking for myself (the only person I ever speak for) I would not have stayed in Portugal as long as the McCanns did and I wouldn't have carried out any investigations. I would have relied on the UK police to keep me informed of anything I needed to know.
