I agree, it's very difficult to imagine a scenario where she would have been kept alive. In my opinion experienced police officers like Edgar shouldn't speculate about such things either. It's acceptable to keep the case open, but not to actively raise false hope imo.

It means to me that I hope that Madeleine is alive and that I have no reason to think that she is dead.
