you may not be aware of this but sometimes the police have incriminating evidence or strong suspicionsagainst someone which on further investigation turns out not to be relevant to the specific crime they are investigating.  And sometimes (hard to believe I know) despite incriminating evidence and strong suspicions they simply don’t gather enough information to press charges.  We don’t know what evidence there was against the three locals and IMO they have not been cleared  (just like them pesky McCanns haven’t, right?)

With a skinny bloke like Breuckner, it seems quite possible that he could have hidden in the approximately 45* space behind the door.  End of wardrobe on one side, wall on another and the door making the final edge of the triangular space.
