Levi Bellfield boasted about murders he didn't commit, for example.

I guess they must all have been telling the truth. Many even saw her distinctive eye defect so they can't have been lying.

You are being ridiculous.   The public were asked to look out for Madeleine.   If you saw a child that fitted Madeleine's description wouldn't you ring the Police and tell them?   It could be Madeleine or it might not be Madeleine,  your conscience is cleared if you ring the Police otherwise you would always be wondering if it was her.

That was to the Police wasn't it.   CB boasted to a friend in a pub.   Why would the friend suddenly go to the Police and tell them what he had been told?   It had been ten years since Madeleine disappeared and a person goes to the Police and tells them a friend confessed,  it's a bit strange for someone to do that IMO unless it was true.
