Luke Mitchell's mother dies 21 years on from her son's conviction which she has been fighting to overturn.
Corinne Mitchell has been campaigning for more than 20 years, claiming her son did not kill Jodi Jones.
Corinne Mitchell, whose son was convicted of murdering schoolgirl Jodi Jones in Dalkeith, Midlothian more than 20 years ago, was laid to rest at a private service surrounded by her loved ones.
The 66-year-old passed away on 9th July according to a public statement shared on social media by Campaigners for Luke Mitchell, who described her as a "devoted mother". Luke was allowed leave from jail to attend the service. It's understood he was escorted by prison officers throughout.
The statement read in part: "It is with great sadness that we share the news that Corinne Mitchell passed away on July 9, 2026. Corinne was laid to rest following a private service surrounded by the people who love her.
"Many of you came to know of Corinne through her unwavering love and support for her son, Luke. Those who knew Corinne also knew that she was a devoted mother who loved both of her sons beyond measure.
"Although Corinne is no longer with us, her spirit will remain. Her determination to see justice done will not be forgotten. In her memory, we will continue to pursue the truth and carry forward the cause that meant so much to her."
Campaigners also vowed to "seek the truth" in her memory and sent a personal message to Luke, who remains behind bars, adding: "To Luke, we hope you know that you are not alone. There are many people who continue to stand beside you, and who will honour your mother's memory by continuing to seek the truth."
The murderer, now 36, is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his 14-year-old girlfriend Jodi Jones, which he has always denied. He was convicted of stabbing Jodi to death in woods near her home in 2003, when he was aged just 14. He was sentenced in 2005 to serve a minimum of 20 years before he became eligible for parole.
