If the scent belonged to Madeleine, the dogs would have shown interest at the side gate (and that led to an enclosed area where scent would have lingered). They didn't.

They emerged from the passage and immediately crossed over to the side of block 6. We don't know if MM ever crossed there. The only person who says he crossed there was her father to speak to Jez Wilkins.

The dogs turned left at the end of the alleyway, back towards the apartment 5A & towards the main road. Then they crossed over.  It depends if you believe the handler's statement or the little diagram as to where the dogs really did go. Either way, GM had been up the rear steps also (more recently than Madeleine) yet the dogs showed no interest at the gate.

Fiona says;

I'd say for, I'd say half three, four o'clock when they brought the twins up, erm I sat on the sofa with Kate next to me and say we had the twins asleep on us, a good half an hour with Kate,
http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/FIONA-PAYNE-ROGATORY.htm

If Fiona remembers correctly the pink blanket wasn't taken away by the patrol dog handler, because his dog sniffed the blanket at 02.30am.

The photos of 5A were taken after the twins were moved and the blanket is on MM's bed.

I seem to recall a discussion of this before about the translation. I'll try to find it when I get a minute. I think I thought it had turned left but I was proved wrong.

Perhaps the multitude of people up and down the road led the dog to follow the scent which wasn't overlaid as much; across the road.

Yep, but that was higher up the road.

Interesting article considering the blanket had been used in the dog searches.http://joana-morais.blogspot.co.nz/2009/07/maddies-blanket-missing-from-ocean-club.html

Quote
As a result of the investigations that have been made by own account after he was removed from the case, Gonçalo Amaral does not dismiss the possibility that the said blanket was used as a funeral blanket in a secret funerary ceremony made in the church of Luz, sustaining that illation in depositions from sources that he believes to be credible, between them, the one of Father José Manuel Pacheco from the Luz chapel.
illation
noun archaic
the action of inferring or drawing a conclusion.

They were air-scenting dogs. Harrison said so. CI Vitor Matos said so. Didn't you read post #540?

I think there is a place for some sort of area of debated and proven facts in the forum.

http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/INFORMATION-SERVICE.htm

Service Information 9 May 2007
To Dr G Amaral
From Vitor Matos, Chief Inspector

Search by GNR dog team

- As you know, yesterday, 8 May 2007 at 23h45, the undersigned joined a search effected by the GNR dog team which targeted Blocks 5 and 4 of the Ocean Club resort and adjacent areas, with the objective of trying to reconstruct the possible route taken by the missing child on 3 May 2007.
- The search was led by GNR 1st Sergeant A.F.Silva, head of the search and rescue team who coordinated all the work done by the "dual track" [method] which was performed by two tracker dogs with their handler, GNR officer P.Fernandes.
- The members of the GNR advised that the tracker dogs are trained to search mainly in rural areas, given the fact that the best capability of the animal is to identify a different and strong smell in a wide, open area, it being sure that in terms of timing they said that after 48 hours from the event it is difficult to obtain positive results. Concerning urban areas, or areas with identical characteristics, they advised that due to the fact of there being a large number of odours in the air, it becomes impossible for the tracker dog to manage to identify/locate the "target smell", because it is diffuse [dispersed; broken up], [the dog] ending up becoming confused and indicating its disinterest in continuing the search........snipped.

How much more proof do people need that these were air scenting dogs?

It is more difficult to find the target smell in urban areas because there are so many other other odours.

It is better to track during the first 48 hours [this was 5 days later]

Only tracker dogs look for a target smell, a specific smell.

The first dogs to arrive from Lisbon at 8am on 4th were air scenting S & R dogs, they didn't ask for an item to scent.

Only the two tracker dogs who arrived at 11pm from Lisbon were given an item to sniff with, [allegedly] the child's scent on it.

If they were all the same, why didn't the first dogs to arrive try to track her? Because they weren't tracker dogs, they came later!!!!!

There must be a reason why people wish to deny that the two tracker dogs followed Madeleine's scent. They followed the scent on a towel supposedly used to dry her. The first dog to follow the same route, at 2.30am on 4th smelled at her blanket.

It is only due to the uncertainty e.g. "a towel supposedly used to dry her" and the uncertainty that Madeleine would have been the only person touching that towel.

That is a valid debating point, the fact that there were tracking dogs deployed isn't.

True I read it as tracking dogs were deployed, but it was a difficult task due to the time that had lapsed.

But I also read it as the first air scenting dogs who had some tracking training were used as well in a tracking mode. Hence G-units statement "the first dog to follow the same route, at 2.30am on 4th smelled at her blanket".
