The tracker dogs

True I read it as tracking dogs were deployed, but it was a difficult task due to the time that had lapsed.

And then to follow that with whatever track they discover, and the parents say well "I took that path with Madeleine earlier", one is none the wiser.  If Madeleine had run around apartment 5 earlier we will never know if the tracker dogs were tracking this or her "final passage" around the building being carried by an abductor, or walking it again.

It would only come into its own if the tracking dogs took their handlers on a path that Madeleine was unlikely to have taken previously.

It doesn't make sense that the S&R dogs were tracking scent from a known route a few days earlier but failed to pick up scent going up the back steps. Perhaps if trailing dogs had been used.................

But if there had been a hit and run car accident (minor injury) and the perpetrator picked up the child for whatever purpose the scent trail could end at the lamp post  in the carpark.

If she'd climbed out the window, walked around the building, been knocked over & removed from the scene by the driver, then it's a possibility. Still doesn't explain why the dogs weren't interested in the rear gate/steps, though.

I could imagine this scenario:
If they were interested the handlers would take their dogs away from there thinking "well obviously her scent will be near this gate"  so it never featured in their report.

That would have been totally unprofessional. The handler should have gone where the dog(s) led him.

That they had gone down to the furthest point away from those blocks, not knowing exactly how, the three children got into the gardens at the rear [of the blocks]. Then they followed the inside corridor [pathway] at the rear, next to the hedges [fences] up to the street that led to the secondary reception.

On all three days MM was delivered to creche in the mornings by her father, as were the twins. This makes sense as Kate had an early tennis lesson.

It could have been that Kate left first in the mornings to play tennis so she wasn't there when the children ran away.

In simple terms - you stick a dog in a field, you give it an item of clothing to scent then you ask the dog to find the source of the scent. That's called air-scenting/tracking.
A trailing dog works with its nose to the ground following a specific scent.

I think you make things seem so sinister by saying "when the children ran away".  They ran ahead in an enclosed area at all times, playing with each other and enjoying themselves.
Exactly as children are allowed to do.
