The dogs used to find Madeleine's scent trail were not sniffer/detection dogs, such as drugs or explosives dogs, they were SAR dogs, search and rescue, with scent discrimination. If they were not, no clothing or items with her scent on would have been requested.

A search and rescue dog trained to find an individual and unique scent would be able to find, only, the individual and unique scent of the person it was primed to find, not much use to all the other poor souls trapped and in need of rescue ...

That is why there are different types

From their training and experience, search and rescue dogs can be classified broadly as either airscenting dogs or trailing (and tracking) dogs. They also can be classified according to whether they scent discriminate, and under what conditions they can work. Scent discriminating dogs have proven their ability to alert only on the scent of an individual person, after being given a sample of that person's scent. Non-scent discriminating dogs alert on or follow any scent of a given type, such as any human scent or any cadaver scent. SAR dogs can be trained specifically for rubble searches, for water searches, and for avalanche searches.

In reading the reports on the Portuguese sniffer dogs, I missed the report of the handler whose dog was given a towel to sniff (sic):

He comes to the process in the role of Chief of the GNR Search and Rescue Team.

I think that confirms it.  Search and rescue dogs don't track the individual and unique human scent.

No, Redblossom, the two dogs which were given the towel are pure sniffer dogs (in Portuguese pisteiros, tracker dogs).

There wouldn't have been need for debate on whether to give the dog something of Madeleine's to sniff if they had dedicated ground scenting dogs at their disposal; neither would there have been the reference to the type of search as highly unusual or distinct from the norm.

Redblossom, quest dogs (rescue dogs) and tracker dogs (trailer dogs) are all trained to use their olfaction gifts, but they don't operate the same way. The rescue dog has no referent scent, its task is to localize the missing person thanks to the specific in-discriminated human scents (that distinguish human beings from chimps, for example) brought by the wind. Whereas time is against the tracker dog (the residual molecules vanish), time works with the rescue dog (scents accumulate where the person is immobilized turning bigger the chances to find him/her).

Ferryman and Anne I will leave you to argue about  the distinctions and titles for the various  dogs used and if they are tracking or trailing dogs. If the dogs that were used when the Mccanns were asked to provide a scented article were not scent discriminating to a person, there would have been no point them asking for it!

SAR dogs look for humans
There are SAR dogs that look for ANY human
There are SAR dogs that look for ONE human

Imo the trouble comes from having many words for designing the same reality. It's not a question of arguing but of using words clearly defined !

Seems you are trying to cover your bases, in fact SAR Dogs are that SEARCH AND RESCUE, if it be one person missing in a field, or twenty under rubble. The SAR dogs will pick those scents up, if they are alive, or the scent is fresh.

Tracker dogs may be used to find criminals or suspects.
In the Madeleine McCann case, they were first used to find her trail, supposing she wandered off or had been carried away by someone, since JT spoke of her sighting rather soon.

Either Madeleine's trail, or one leading from the scene. One trail from the scene went from the apartment, into the car park around the back and stopped suddenly

quite, or in a woke and wandered scenario - the child having been run over by accident - and the driver in a mad panic, spiriting the body away

whichever way we cut it

local knowledge is key
