See Post Above.  He was questioned.

I don't think anyone questions the fact that he was questioned, the doubt is around if he was questioned by OG or even if it was anything to do with MM.

You beat me to it!

It does not seem to say that the Maltese Government confirmed a visit by Operation Grange detectives.

A Paedophile is questioned and everyone rushes in to defend him.  You couldn't make it up.

Maybe you should have continued reading the cite ...

MacDonald is the first person to be questioned in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance since July, when four men were quizzed as arguidos – persons of interest.

A British paedophile has been interviewed by police in his jail cell in Malta about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007.

Roderick MacDonald, 77, was quizzed as part of Operation Grange by Scotland Yard detectives.

They wanted to know about MacDonald's links to a paedophile ring which was active in Portugal and has been linked to Madeleine's disappearance.

A former friend of MacDonald revealed he boasted about his time in the Algarve area.

"He was always talking about how he was in the Algarve when Madeleine went missing," they said.

Why so adamant that this man was a person of interest to Operation Grange?  Denial may work for some, but I think it is common sense that SY have questioned such a reprobate ... there is no doubt they checked out the Scottish ones, and goodness knows how many others ... why should this man therefore be exempt?
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

It's bizarre!  Why do some people find it so hard to come to terms with the fact that Operation Grange questioned this known paedophile who was living in the Algarve at the time of Madeleine's disappearance?

No one is defending him, unless you believe that because he is a convicted child sex offender he can be fitted up for any crime involving children

I think you missed out a "not" however I am not denying anything merely pointing out flaws in your argument based on what you posted originally which was from Red Top. There is no confirmation from a reliable source.
Your resorting to "I think it is commonsense" does rather make my point for me.

We know Op Grange have been looking into sex attacks on girls in the Algarve in the 2000s

We know that McDonald is a paedophile who was living in the area at the time of the attacks.

Newspaper reports make it clear that McDonald was questioned by the Met.

"Sceptics" won't accept it, however, based on reasons that are not clear to the rest of us.

Weird, but not surprising.

One smiles with resignation when the provenance of a cite is questioned ... perhaps you would be kind enough to direct me to the approved list which may meet with your exacting requirements.

Do you think it would have been appropriate for Operation Grange to have ignored and failed to interview a multi identification and multi passported paedophile known to have an association with the Algarve and those of his evil persuasion there?

I would have called that sheer incompetence ...

Extraordinary you would think that whatever his name is would not be subject to police questioning under the circumstances, but there you go.

What I think is immaterial. I am curious to know how you arrive at your conclusion when the only facts quoted in the article that may be attributed to the horses mouth, as it were, are:
"Scotland Yard said they would not give a “running commentary” on the investigation but their visit to MacDonald was confirmed by Maltese Government officials".
That does not tell much and the rest of the article is seasoned with comments like "it is believed that".

CEOP annual review 2009-10.
McDonald was arrested in Australia in 2001, but fled to New Zealand.  There he was picked up, but granted bail on the basis that he handed in his passport.  In Nov 2009 he fled to the UK using a stolen passport, and from there CEOP managed to track him to the Algarve.

The CEOP report does not specify when he was picked up in New Zealand, so it is possible he travelled to the Algarve, returned to New Zealand, got picked up, handed over passport, then stole another passport.

From memory, although there were reports in the media that he had been in NZ for years before he fled, such reports are in papers of roughly the same quality as the Mirror, so I don't intend digging this lot out again.

On balance, it looks like he was not in Portugal for the date of the attacks (2004-2010), and not in the Algarve in 2007.

As to whether he knew of paedophile activity that may have been occurring in 2007 on the Algarve, that is another matter.  But I would have thought if such involved Madeleine, someone somewhere would have offered this up by now.

Unless you have definitive proof that he was in the Algarve in 2007, please don't claim he definitely was.  He almost certainly wasn't.
What's up, old man?

Where was he, almost certainly, then?

ETA: did not some of the attacks on girls occur whilst he was known to be in the Algarve in 2010?  How long had he been there prior to his arrest?

There has been no proof or official confirmation of where he was in 2007.  He could have been anywhere on a false passport.
