Yesterday, the prosecution announced the reopening of the proceedings. In a note released at lunch, the Attorney General's Office said that the reopening was determined "following a proposal by the Judiciary Police, and given the presentation of new evidence to justify further investigation."

PÚBLICO reported yesterday that a possible request for reopening was the result of a reanalysis of the process carried out by the team of PJ do Porto, created in March 2011. A group of four inspectors led by research coordinator Helena Monteiro - who had never contacted the inquiry, thus avoiding any contamination in the assessment - will have identified witnesses who were never questioned while the proceedings were in progress, by July 2008.

The PJ confirmed yesterday in a statement that it was the work of this team to give rise to the reopening of the case. "This work of reanalysis, which took place during the last two and a half years, allowed us to know new evidence that, by imposing the continuation of the investigation, fulfilled the requirements ... for the reopening of the investigation," reads the note.

PÚBLICO knows that the members of the PJ do Porto have already visited the Algarve several times to gather elements and carry out informal procedures, which have made it possible to justify the need to reopen the case.

The PJ is focusing again on the investigation into the kidnapping thesis, the main line followed by Scotland Yard, who also opened an inquiry into Maddie's disappearance. However, the lines of investigation being followed by the two police are distinct and the proceedings will run in parallel, as the London Metropolitan Police acknowledged in a statement issued yesterday.

Quite simply ... there is little or no information entering the public domain regarding the progress of Madeleine's case because the investigation is being conducted under the legal rule of judicial secrecy.

In my opinion Portuguese and British police when reviewing the evidence discovered huge swatches which had not been followed through in the original investigation and which to investigate adequately demanded the reopening of Madeleine's case.

Evidence led Portuguese and British police investigations in the direction of stranger abduction.

Do I need to remind you that Rebelo was coordinator of the case for longer than Amaral. Shouldn’t he shoulder some of the blame if there was any ‘clearing up’ to do ‘ ?

Yes, Rebelo was. But in the context of taking over what may have been a messy case (IMO) with 3 arguidos and a strict time-frame, I don't see how he could have done much more.

His team checked on potential sources of ink, but not potentially duplicate keys. The only logical explanation (IMO) is that it was a race against the clock as to whether to charge any of the arguidos or not.

Hindsight is a wonderful ability.  Kate McCann's reference to Tweedledee and Tweedledum evidenced an appalling lack of respect for police charged with clearing up the mess resulting from their poor parenting skills.  Amaral had to conduct the investigation under extremely challenging conditions with private consultants, a foreign police force second-guessing his every move and a media leaking like a sieve.

The dogs did not act independently... It is suggested in the police files that the second dog may simply have followed the trail of the first... The evidence  you think is compelling is not if you read the report of the dog handler in the files...

The first dogs were patrol dogs who arrived at around 2.30 am. In the apartment there were PJ officers and the McCanns. They were given Madeleine's pink blanket from her bed.

The actual sniffer dogs were used at 11 pm on 4th and they were given the bath towel.

All the dogs followed the same route.

Was the pink blanket kept by the first dog team? They continued to search until morning. It depends what time the photos were taken in 5A, because the blanket was on the bed in those.
