Sheila Caffell's illness
« on: May 08, 2020, 11:30:11 AM »
On 2nd August 1983 Dr Ferguson saw Sheila Caffell in Harley Street. He says that she was referred to him by her GP. [w/s 8/8/85]

Her GP, Dr Angeloglou, claims that he knew nothing about Sheila's problems until he received a report from Dr Ferguson in August 1983 informing him that she had been admitted to St Andrews Hospital on 4th August 1983.

Doctors keep records and yet these two are disagreeing about what happened when Sheila first fell ill. It looks like her parents took charge and took her straight to Dr Ferguson.

Her parents must have suspected that Sheila had problems but what convinced them to take her to Dr Ferguson we don't know.

He was known to them. He'd treated June's mental illness.

Yes, and according to Jeremy Bamber his father wasn't keen on the NHS. What I meant was what happened to make the Bambers decide that Sheila needed to see Ferguson. Was it a gradual decline or some kind of incident?

According to Farhad Emami his first impression of Sheila as a person was that she was 'a little slow', 'unable to grasp simple things' and 'the sort of person who relied on others to make decisions'. His opinion, having known Sheila for some time, was that she had been building up to her first breakdown for some time. [w/s 8/8/85]

Dr Ferguson agreed, describing her case as having 'a slow onset leading to an acute breakdown' which inferred 'a poor outlook'. She was in a state of 'acute psychosis and had been for about two weeks'.

Well, well, well ...... I have found another reference to the opium poppies. It is in Colin's book (Chapter 3, page 43). He states that Stan Jones told him "Nevill was growing opium under a special government license for the pharmaceutical indistry". Obviously he was told this by Jeremy and it led to Sheila being tested for narcotics. The tests proved negative for cocaine BUT he goes on to say that there was an"unusually high level of haloperidol" in her system.

I don't know, but there must have been an incident or a change in behaviour which made her parents decide that she needed psychiatric assessment.

Whatever caused them to seek help from Dr Ferguson Sheila did indeed need treatment. He says she was no longer deluded nor hallucinating when she was discharged on 10/9/83, so perhaps that was what had alarmed her parents. Dr Ferguson described her as having made a partial recovery. He continued to see her as an out-patient and gave her what he describes as a low dose anti-psychotic drug.

The only involvement of her GP practice seems to have been prescribing this drug; Stelazine, which her GP describes as a major tranquiliser. It was prescribed, according to her GP, shortly after she was discharged from hospital.

Both descriptions of the drug are correct, it seems, so anti-psychotic drugs are major tranquilizers.

Although Dr Ferguson recommended NHS treatment he says this was rejected by both Sheila and her parents. Her GP mentions no input into her treatment except for issuing prescriptions and reading reports sent to him by Dr Ferguson from time to time.

It states here https://www.verywellmind.com/comedown-crash-rebound-effect-after-drugs-4171269

“If you feel ill during a comedown, you may be having medical complications in reaction to the drug. If these persist, it is important to get a medical evaluation.

It is also important to be evaluated for emotional or psychological symptoms, such as extreme anxiety or panic, paranoid feelings, extreme anger, distress or depression, especially if this involves thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else, and psychotic symptoms, such as hearing voices. Make sure you tell them what you have taken, how much, and when. It is better to get early intervention than suffer greater complications later on.

A number of sites contain numerous lies about Sheila's mental health including the lie that a few months before the murders Ferguson wrote upon releasing her that he thought she could harm her family.  Others misrepresent that she had been violent in the past with others and distort the timeline to make it appear events that occurred in 1983 had in fact occurred in 1985.

For instance, Farhad Emami talked about shortly after she was released in 1983.  He claimed she relapsed and had a psychotic epsiode where she didn't want anyone to touch her or go near her.  She didn't attack anyone, the only person she supposedly hit was herself, but she didn't want anyone to touch her and made a commotion as they tried. She wanted to be left alone.  This happened in 1983 not 1985.

In early 1985 she relapsed because she stopped taking her medication and  instead was taking drugs.  Drugs like cocaine and LSD are known to exacerbate mental illness.  They can cause delusions and hallucinations even in people who don't have mental illness. Because of this she was prescribed a very powerful drug and it was administered by injection so that she would not fall into the same trap as in the past of skipping treatment.

It’s possible SC was misdiagnosed by Dr Ferguson

The CT website states:

‘There is no question that the presentation of Sheila Caffell in the media was upsetting for all of the remaining relatives.[5] This was also harmful to the community of Toleshunt D’arcy more generally, and Jeremy and his family fell in to the category of ‘gossip’ and National Newspapers escalated rumors about connections between Sheila and drugs. Her relationship with alleged drug dealer Farhad Emami was regurgitated and used negatively, instead of positively, by showing how he had tried to support her financially and helped her during previous psychotic episodes.[6] Emami had left for Iran before the trial, but was contacted by police who noted in a memo that he would not return, and that if he testified it would be for the Defence and not the prosecution.[7] He was never called as a witness at the trial.

Who was the ‘close friend’ who started the rumours of SC and ‘heroin/methadone’ via Kieron Saunders at the Sun?

Was it Bamber ?

Or could it have been Farhad Emami who phoned Kieron Saunders ?

Was this around the time of her involvement with Farhad Emami ?

According to Emami's evidence in 1985 he had known her for four years and helped to find her flat in Morshead Mansions in 1982 at the request of her father. He and Colin helped her with moving in. Colin says little about this period, perhaps because he was having problems with his relationship with Jan Flowers at the time; caused, in part, by Sheila's continuing reliance on her ex husband.

According to Holly re ‘Jan Flowers’ & CC

But I don't think it was just another appetite to feed as CC ended up living with the woman in question: Jan Flowers. It seems she eventually saw the light and offloaded him.
