Absolutely but the resort managers knew there was a history of break-ins so they had a moral responsibility to their guests to reinforce the window message whilst understandably at the same time not creating any sort of alarm.

Given the history at the complex the very least there should have been was some form of security presence and CCTV but alas, commercial considerations and interests were deemed a greater priority over client security.  Mark Warner staff even complained about the strangers in the gardens and hanging about outside in the shadows but still, nothing was done.

MW  Provided baby sitting service. They could have taken the children with them out for dinner- as we as a family always do. Security would have been no better than the families checking..

One would hope that Mark Warner had carried out background checks on staff. Not that that is any great shakes. Dodgy people tend to hide their intentions rather than hide themselves.

Also they all had to walk along a dark unlit alleyway for varying distances and then go thru dark back gardens and up unlit steps.

The Mccanns situation was different.  they had the security of light. at the back of their apartment whilsh having an extremely dark hidden bogey hole  for their front entrance

The rest of the group also had a lit hallway or landing for their front doors


Doesn't need rocket science to see why the Mccanns chose to use their well lit rear patio doors whilst the rest chose their well lit front doors.

In all the chat on the thread about why didn't Gerald and Jeremy see Jane we were lead to believe the street lights should more accurately be described as "darks".

When the Carpenter family left the tapas restaurant which was shortly after Jane passed the two men in the street and before the alarm was raised, there were vehicles parked in the street.
 
SC mentions in his rogatory statement that he had difficulty crossing the road as his vision was blocked by them.

Unfortunately the CCTV situated at the supermarket, which would have covered that area, was not working ... or all might have been revealed.

Similarly if there had been CCTV in the tapas restaurant as there was in the Millennium restaurant there would have been no problem with timelines and the police could have directed their exertions elsewhere when that was established.

However, I presume that anyone whether abductor or burglar would have been aware of security measures in place and how to avoid being captured on CCTV where it was in operation. 

Perhaps MW should have investigated installation as a security measure given the spread out nature of the resort and the fact it was not ‘self contained’.
