I agree with Anna that the 'heavy' curtains don't look too heavy ... I would think heavy guage cotton? and the photograph indicated certainly shows nets ... so it could be either or.

I don't think too much reliance can be placed on the crime scene photographs because imo among the first places you would look for a missing child would be under beds and behind curtains so the positioning would be disturbed.
We know that Dr K McCann looked out of the window, perhaps disturbing the curtains in the process.

It was when she pulled the door towards her that it banged shut ... suggests to me that another door was open.

If it was the bedroom patio door that would not have been seen from the stairs to the apartment.

In the couple of minutes taken to check Madeleine's bedroom and cross to the window to look out before searching the apartment, intruders could have quietly closed the glass door and lowered the shutters and made good their escape without being seen.

What is the drop like into the flower garden?  Too risky to use the stairs? although sometimes needs must; but exiting from the balcony into the garden, accessing the lane at the back and out into the lane between the two buildings would enable them to stay one step ahead of the alarm and searchers, take them in the direction of the Smith family at about the appropriate time.

The Smiths were walking towards the crime scene ... but apart from that one individual ... they are not recorded as having witnessed any furore or searchers despite the search for Madeleine taking place.

Very good, Brietta. I think it is a fairly likely that this happened, but the culprit may have already left when K went to check the children and possibly left the window slightly open. If as was said, someone checked the blinds in that room, could they have closed it, and thought nothing of it?
That entry/exit does not seem to have been checked at all by the crime scene guys and could have held some evidence of use.
How high was the wall that divided the balconies I wonder.
The curtains by an open window and a through draft would act like a curtain on a washing line and billow out while the door was open and vacuum in to the wall. when closed.(have I got that the right way round?)
Nobody seen searching by the smiths after leaving the pub is true, which means that the sighting was earlier than approx 10.10-10.15,  when they all started running around like headless chickens.

Those curtains don't look as heavy as the living room curtains, they look as thin as the duvet covers. See pic 14 on link above, where those living room curtains are blowing out of the apartment.
I see the window was removed from the frame, and not removed from the apartment but left to get contaminated by dust or brushing past it by forensic people.

Thank you DCI.
These curtains have billowed right out of the windows and the empty space where the window has been removed or open front door may have caused it.
They are lightweight curtains from what I can see and therefore would have no resistance to draughts.
I wondered what., that was standing against the wall in the children's room, but thanks to you, I now know that it is the window.

What is the first thing you do when you go into a dark bedroom to check on the kids and you cannt see them clearly?

You put on the light!

If there is only one child in the room, yes.
If there is more than one child probably not, to avoid disturbing them.

In the first instance of seeing Madeleine wasn’t in her bed Dr McCann assumed she had wakened and had gone to hers.  Although she doesn’t state it, I assume that she didn’t use the ambient light from the living room, but switched the light on there.

It doesn’t seem as if she was taken step by step through her statement and asked for that sort of detail.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

[quote removed as irrelevant]

She noticed immediately in her first version, in her second though, she goes a bit myopic & some floor length curtans untuck themselves from behind a bed & chair.

When I first looked at the crime scene photos without knowing anything about the case I thought that must be Madeleine's bed next to the window. Imagine my surprise when it was the neat and tidy not looked slept in one. That curtain is completely trapped against the wall. No whooshing from that position.
Smithman carrying a child in his arms checked his watch after passing the Smith family and the time was 10:03. Both are still unidentified 10 years later.

Please check out the recent discussions we have had on this forum regarding the curtains.

Or if you can't be bothered to do that ... check the crime scene photographs where they are clearly visible ... or failing that check out Dr Amaral's documentary where the net curtains are clearly seen billowing out.

Net Curtains.

Her first statement "She noticed that the door to her children's bedroom was completely open, the window was also open, the shutters raised and the curtains open, while she was certain of having closed them all as she always did."

She wasn't interviewed again by the PJ until 6 September (4 months later) and then wasn't even asked about the events from 5:30 onwards 3 May. Those were in the unanswered 48 questions. When did the net curtains story first appear? How many years after the fact?

I have no idea.  I think Kate just said Curtains.  Can you prove otherwise?

You'd think she'd have told Crimewatch that it was the nets, wouldn't you.

But no, they had to use some shorter curtains to get it to work.
