There would appear to be a dearth of information relating to Jeremy's activities down under before his hurried return to England.
We know that he visited Australia and New Zealand on a couple of occasions after persuading his father to sponsor a scuba diving course. He later ended up sharing a flat on North Island, New Zealand with a guy who was later to take an active part in proceedings following the murders at White House Farm.
In the book "Murder at white House farm", Claire Powell states that while in New Zealand, Jeremy reportedly broke into a jewellery store and stole two expensive Cartier watches, one of which he gave to a girlfriend back in England. Susan Battesby later recounted that Julie Mugford had told her that Jeremy had given Sue Ford one of the watches as a present.
Also according to Powell, Jeremy boasted that he had been involved in smuggling heroin overseas. One of his cousins later said Bamber ended up leaving New Zealand in a hurry, because friends of his had been involved in an armed robbery. Indeed, in a hand-written note by Jim Carr to Robert Boutflour it was stated that Jeremy had to leave Australia in a hurry and that details of this episode had been passed by Rob Carr to the police at Witham.
It is known that Jeremy was desperate to leave the country and begged his mother, June Bamber, for help in getting home. For her part she had to wire him £2000 and had to keep the matter hidden from Nevill who had refused any further help.
