A UK national might not be living in Uk, in which case SY would have no jurisdiction

So not The McCanns then?

I don't recall them being mentioned in that context in this thread.

Would it be embarrassing for the UK if the PJ solved it and found it was a UK national?
No, why should t be?

It obviously isn't a UK National.  Scotland Yard don't need permission from Portugal on that one.

It's not obvious to me. How do you work that out?

I don't know why you think the Portuguese might be embarrassed? I can see nothing to be embarrassed about, but if there is then why not the other scenario? It can't be because they failed to catch whoever, they had a year and OG have had a lot longer, loads more people and loads more money.

I think the Portuguese authorities would be embarrassed because it would confirm without doubt that their initial investigation, leading to the making arguidos of the McCanns was a complete cock-up.  It would be embarrassing because of how quickly they gave up on the case when there were many leads left un-followed up.  It would also prove that "national hero" Amaral's judgement was seriously flawed,  that under his and his colleagues' watch they allowed a child abductor to evade justice for many years.  The majority of the country apparently is still convinced the McCanns dunnit - how would the country cope with the knowledge that they'd been wrong to be pointing the finger at innocent parents of a missing child all these years?  I'd hope they'd be ashamed of themselves, but maybe if they have no shame, then perhaps you're right - no embarrassment either.

I don't know much about the Oporto investigation, but I thought one of the drivers was to look at Euclides Monteiro?

That ticks all the boxes you are suggesting the Portuguese don't want ticked.
What's up, old man?

I dunno, is it?  Have the PJ confirmed this?

The investigation made mistakes but so do UK investigations, so no shame there. The McCanns behaviour has raised suspicions all over the world, not just in Portugal, so no shame there either. Amaral had 5 months to investigate and faced many hindrances. Had the group returned for the reconstruction the case may not have been archived, we'll never know.

When investigations are discovered to have made mistakes, or worse when attempts to cover up those mistakes  or shift the blame to others are uncovered then it should be a major embarrassment and shame should be felt by those responsible.  Just because mistakes and cover ups occur the world over does not mitigate that fact.

I don't like to refer to a recent case in the UK where mistakes were made and a cover-up succeeded for many years, only finally being exposed after years of effort by Liverpool families but.......................

Hopefully those involved feel major embarrassment and shame; they certainly ought to.

Yes, that was the case I had in mind also, so you understand my point then.
