That just about sums it all up - never mind Madeleine, just make sure Portugal's reputation is not tarnished.

Nine years on that would appear to be the harsh reality of it.  Everyone is out to protect their reputation.

Is that one of those statements that would become libelous if you actually inserted individual names into the field  "everyone"?
Or is it just so natural that it is not harmful, for who wouldn't want to protect their reputation?

It was notable that the Portuguese wouldn't allow the reinterview of the latest witnesses/arguidos since SY failed to bring any new evidence to the table.  You could say the PJ were concerned for the witnesses reputations.  Thus endeth the latest fishing exercise.

Fact is you don't know what I know or who I speak with.

I do remember that you once told us to write down our questions for Martin Grime,  who - (according to someone you spoke with) would be happy to answer our questions.

It never happened.
The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.

That's correct, the questions were put to him directly but he felt unable to answer them since the case was still live and he might be required to testify. He did say though that the questions were very relevant.

The questions are still available on thread so we might have another go.

Yes I do remember that John     - but my point is that you can't always rely on people 'who you speak with' to necessarily give you the correct information.

Nigh night.

I totally agree, we have had all sorts get in touch over the years from the genuine to the crackpot.

It certainly wasn't quid pro quo for the Portuguese interviews of the tapas seven by the Rebelo detectives which also may have been a fishing exercise.
Then wouldn't that be an expression which would fit most police interviews?

Portuguese police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are expected to say today that their trip to the UK to re-interview the Tapas 7 was fruitless, with no new leads being thrown up.

I was thinking more along a personal level "Everyone is out to protect their reputation"  then could be broken down to
Gerry, Kate, Matthew, Russell, Jane, Silvia, John, etc etc are out to protect their reputations.

(That in itself can't be libelous because it is human nature.)

We know the T7 were closely associated with the events of that night, we don't know what evidence connects the latest suspects.

Your wording is very loose and thus easy to be misinterpreted.  The McCann friends were never suspects either collectively or individually.

The storm appears to have passed, so how close did it get?  One degree of separation.

One resident of Luz was indignant about the tours.  It had nothing to do with them being so-called ghouls tours.  It was simply that he hoped if there was nothing in the news about Madeleine, life in Luz would get back to the way it was before her disappearance.

That, by the way, is the attitude of many here.  If only we can ignore developments in the case, things will be as it was in the good old days.

It hasn't a snowball's chance in hades of happening, but many think ignorance is bliss.

This individual had a rather interesting tale to tell.  He recently took his family, including young kids, to Kos for a holiday.  During their stay one of the locals twigged that they lived in 'Praia da Luz'.  The local opined that he would never live in or visit Luz, because that is the place where Madeleine disappeared.  He further opined that the visitor was barking, for allowing small children to reside in an unsafe location.

Well, the Luz resident got a bit heated about that.  How could someone from Kos think Luz was dangerous and Kos was safe?  (I don't know if this exchange occurred before or during the latest dig on Kos.  As I say, I was one degree of contact removed from this person.)

What do you mean? says the Kos resident.

Kos is where Ben Needham disappeared - said the Luz resident.

Who's Ben Needham? asked the Kos resident.

This, unfortunately, is a true story.  Both that the Luz resident thinks the tack to take on Madeleine is to hope everything will simply go away, and that the Kos resident was ignorant of the case of Ben Needham.
What's up, old man?

I'm quite surprised Shining hasn't been strung up on one of those "Stop the McCann Circus" road signs if he is actively promoting the McCann's innocence within the context of the tours.

I just cannot imagine ever wanting to go on a 'this is Maddies last sightings tour'. * shudders* In fact now we know it is awash with paedophiles, swathy types, gypsies, burglars and kidnappers I can't think of ever wanting to go to PDL for anything!

I am not against professional journalists, and genuine detectives amature or professional who are trying to asssertain what happened, having a guided look around- but it will attract those who like to sniff about macabre areas like leeds where Sutciffe terrorised women- Cromwell road where the Wests terrorised many and still to this day  evils creeps still wander around the moors where Brady and Hindley enjoyed torturing the families of children they tortured, murdered and buried there.
IF Maddie was kidnapped by a 'gang' I wouldn't be surprised if the people involved did not go on this tour for some kind of sick gratification.
