The sensationalism of the time and her position as the mother of a missing child in great measure to the success of her first book.

Do you really think if the public didn't have a purient interest in the case Kate's tome would have sold as many copies as it did ? Do you really think she'd have made it as a writer under her own steam?
I think the point Brietta was making is that Amaral has chosen author of books (plural) about the McCann case as his new career of choice (despite not being all that good at it).  Kate McCann has written one solitary book, not as a career choice but to put money into the Fund to find her daughter.  Slightly different I'm sure you'd agree....

She never aspired to a literary career ~ although she proved to be jolly good at it when forced to do it to replenish the almost empty coffers of the fund for her daughter.  Amaral does ~ and past efforts might not have justified a visit to Swiss bankers, so the comparison with his one hit wonder will be interesting ... not that he will be too worried about that I imagine.

Glad to see you acknowledge that Kate's 'MADELEINE' was a best seller.

I saw one in a charity shop for 10p, so doesn't look as if much value is put on it. Followers probably have signed copies which might be worth marginally more.

The fact that the Supreme Court has ruled in his favour will undoubtedly invoke an interest from those who aren't already familiar with events.  Let's hope its not a "I did, they did" historical reminder which would be ultra boring.
A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

Didn't it make a million pounds
That's reasonable value

Defamation per se[edit]
All states except Arizona, Missouri, and Tennessee recognize that some categories of false statements are so innately harmful that they are considered to be defamatory per se. In the common law tradition, damages for such false statements are presumed and do not have to be proven.

Statements are defamatory per se where they falsely impute to the plaintiff one or more of the following things:[2]

Allegations or imputations "injurious to another in their trade, business, or profession"
Allegations or imputations "of loathsome disease" (historically leprosy and sexually transmitted disease, now also including mental illness)
Allegations or imputations of "unchastity" (usually only in unmarried people and sometimes only in women)
Allegations or imputations of criminal activity (sometimes only crimes of moral turpitude)[12]

there you are

Yeah so you can cut and paste from Wikipedia so whats new?. Show us how Sr Amaral's book is libelous under those rules then.
I would refer to Greg le Mond-Lance Armstrong-Sunday Times.
Especially the Lance Armstrong- Sunday Times caper. A salutory lesson in there indeed.

Not that good at it?  I wouldn't mind getting 340k for what amounts to a short story.

Was he worth suing then?
What's up, old man?

amaral has made an allegation that the mccanns have committed several criminal acts
intent to pervert the course of justice
causing the death of their daughter by giving her calpol which caused her to have an accident
covering up her death
and a multi million pound fraud re the fund

that by definition is libel per se
armstrong I dont believe was accused of any criminal acts and is therfore not relevant

as you have copied and pasted from wiki you are in no position to criticise me

The issue was whether he was good at penning a short story.  He seems to have been proficient enough in that respect.

If you judge it purely by sales as you are......then kate must have been a far better author

He was good for one book (albeit a not very good book, full of inaccuracies,  and so insubstantial there are Mr Men books that take longer to read), there is no indication whatsoever that his subsequent literary efforts have been quite so lucrative or widely read.

I think the problem with Amaral's book is that he mixes fact with opinion which is never a good basis for any book about real life events. If Madeleine was abducted, and it is still a very big 'IF', then only the person or persons involved know the truth of it.  If she wasn't abducted and disappeared due to some terrible accident then the mystery could well endure for ever.

My own view is that he was wrong to explore his thesis within "The Truth of the Lie" and should have stayed with the known facts and the evidence.  By doing this in a methodical manner he could have left it to readers to come to their own conclusions thus avoiding litigation and a book ban in the UK and elsewhere.  That to me would have served him and the truth much better.

There is a much bigger story yet to be told, maybe he intends to touch on that in his new book?
