I think it's pretty obvious from what he says in Oct 2007 - that John Stalker did not know about Portugal's Secrecy Laws or that it had been made clear to the McCanns/ Tapas 7 that (although elements of the PJ were breaking the laws at will)  - they could face a prison sentence if they broke them and tried to defend themselves or oneanother,         He compares them with other cases he has worked on where it is apparent that no such prohibitive  law of the land existed and so it's not a fair comparison.

I do not believe he would have made the following comments emphasizing their 'silence' if he did know about the Portuguese Secrecy laws.

McCanns 'are hiding a big secret', former police chief claims
Last updated at 14:34 28 October 2007

Kate and Gerry McCann are hiding a "big secret" about the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine, according a former police chief claims.
John Stalker, who headed a famous inquiry into whether suspected IRA men were killed by RUC officers, is suspicious of their silence.

The former Deputy Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police told the Sunday Express: “My gut instinct is that some big secret is probably being covered up.

“I have watched the investigation into the Madeleine McCann case drag out for six months.

“One thing above all worries me: Why have the McCanns and the seven other members of their group – the Tapas Nine – remained so silent?

“Unlike other high-profile cases I have worked on, not one of them has been prepared to break ranks or really come out and support each other.

“After all this time and pressure, I cannot believe that nobody wants to speak.

“I have a real suspicion that we are not being told the whole truth. There is something else there, some issue that members of the party are embarrassed about”

He wasn't very observant if he ' watched the investigation into the Madeleine McCann case drag out for six months' because the sercecy laws were quoted endlessly as the reason for their silence. He refers to his gut instinct, which is not evidence, it's just that feeling you get when something's not quite right. Many police officers develop this skill, perhaps because so many of the people they deal with are trying to hide something.

It's just that there are other experts in their field whose views you don't bow to, or who you believe lie to the general public.

Exton was closer to the investigation, and evidence, than any of the other so called 'experts' and therefore his opinion obviously has more weight. Isn't that just common sense?

It intrigues me too!
Oakley covered a lot of ground in six months when you consider The Met needed up to 40 ish bodies for three plus years.
I read that paragraph a few times too thinking about the lie detector tests.  Has anyone confirmed the use of those?

Not having been trained in statement analysis I bow to the expertise of someone who has, Exton, who identified 'anomalies' and whose report was 'hypercritical' of the McCanns.
Who described the report as hypercritical?
wasnt the oakley investigation a sham
No doubt a mixture of fact and fiction.

Closer to the investigation than the current investigating team both in the UK and Portugal who are very obviously not inluding the McCanns or their friends in their list of suspects?

We have no idea who OG have in their sights. All we know that in 2013 we were told the McCanns weren't. Four years and a new head of the investigation later who knows what they think.

It is funny how the opportunity to mention it came up on the back of someone else's post.  Maybe Exton was closer to another theory than we realise, that would have been totally unacceptable to the McCanns.  Especially if they had put undercover operatives into the staff of Ocean Club as they said.  From that perspective they would have pinpointed the discrepancies between the McCanns' and the friend's statements.  Discrepancies which seem to be lost on us, for no one has a definite idea what the discrepancies are that Exton was talking about.

There is the controversy of the Smith sighting E-fits being held back for 5 years too.  Why was that?
It would be hard to think that the McCanns were protecting the kidnapper themselves.  I suppose that could be a tactic for Madeleine's protection in that too much pressure on the abductor could result in the abductor to take action to get rid of the evidence (i.e. get rid of Madeleine).
(Its raining today so looking into things - "Police Know Who Kidnapped Madeleine McCann, Can’t Arrest Them" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8c3f26M8-Q  we certainly have had no further confirmation af that.  If it is like the panel say it is a political situation I can imagine SY just keeping the case active to keep the psychological pressure on the Portuguese police.)
