The decision by the Portuguese Supreme Court to throw out the McCann's claim against Mr Amaral appears to have been the catalyst which has seen interest in the case slowly decline.  Not only did Portugal's highest court throw out the damages claim but they went to the trouble in their written judgement to question the interpretation of the Attorney General's original archiving report which some had claimed cleared the parents.

With the mystery yet unsolved and the police investigations about to close, has momentum in the case now wained as it has reached a 10-year low?

I think interest has definitely wained in that the general public has far more important things to concern itself with.

Whether this has been directly affected by the Supreme Court ruling is debatable.

The number of Maddie stories in the media has declined considerably recently but it was inevitable given everything which has gone on over the last twelve months.  It certainly was a rollercoaster ride while it lasted.

Still wondering how the above in bold can be justified - in view of the following pronouncement also made by the SC,

Judges made it clear in their decision their job was not to decide whether the McCanns bore any criminal responsibility over their daughter’s disappearance and it would be wrong for anyone to draw any inferences about the couple’s guilt or innocence from their ruling.

So which one is it?  They can't have it both ways.
The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.

The bit which I found odd was that a civil court found it necessary to comment on what is a criminal issue.  For some reason they wanted to make clear that the jury was still out on parental culpability.

To answer your question, the court rightly declined to draw any inferences but regardless wanted to make clear that some interpretations of the Archive were mistaken.  Their conclusion was that the original investigation did not clear the parents.

Then they not only did draw inferences, but they also came to conclusions based on them!

If that's not a total contradiction of their later pronouncement - I don't know what is.

I agree, the atmosphere has changed dramatically.  Where it goes from here is anyone's guess.

They seem to me to be tying the situation up into knots:  how is it possible that Madeleine's parents were not cleared by the conclusions reached by the original investigation while the Policia Judiciaria, like their counterparts in London, did not consider either of them suspects when Madeleine's case was reopened in 2013?

McCann is not suspected in the new investigation into her daughter's disappearance

The prosecution has ordered the reopening of the inquiry into the disappearance of the English girl.

RTP knows that Maddie McCann's parents are not considered suspects in the new line of investigation of the case.

The decision is a consequence of the proposal of the Judiciary Police and the presentation of new evidence that justify the investigation to continue.

In a statement, the prosecution adds that the Criminal Investigation Judge was requested to postpone access to the records, for a period that is essential to the conclusion of the investigation.

The case dates back to May 2007. The child, at the age of four, disappeared from the room where he slept with his siblings in a tourist resort in Praia da Luz, Algarve, where the English family was on vacation.

The decision, which the Attorney General's Office revealed today, comes a week after British police had presented another robot portrait of a new suspect and evidence of further investigation.
Scotland Yard welcomed the reopening of the inquiry in Portugal and underlined that it will take place in parallel with the British investigation.

Seems that everybody in Portugal is marching out of step with the exception of three appeal court judges.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

I agree, it's all a tad confusing.  Bottom line though seems to be that the parents are currently not deemed to be suspects but neither have they been cleared according to Portugal's Supreme Court. A bit of an impasse really.

The Supreme Court gave no opinion on the guilt or innocence of the McCanns. All they did was reject the McCann's claim that the archiving dispatch had cleared them. The may well be innocent, but they can't claim that the archiving dispatch said they were.

They can claim that SY have said they are.

Rather than wondering why the media have gone quiet, we should perhaps wonder why they remained interested in the story for ten years.

They can claim that SY have said they are.

SY have stated recently that the parents are not suspects which is not the same thing as saying they have been pronounced innocent.  If a body is found in PdL that could all change overnight.

They can, and their supporters point this out endlessly. The problem arising is that SY seem to have reached that conclusion after reviewing the evidence gathered by the first investigation. If the Portuguese investigation wasn't able to 'clear' them based on that evidence how did SY manage it?

Redwood claimed they had gone back to the start yet Rowley claims they only went back to where the original enquiry left off so who's bullshitting who?
