Why not I wonder, when that was his theory, the one that appeared in his best selling book.
There is no reference to 'freezer', 'fridge' or 'frozen' in his book.
What's up, old man?

An interview quote...

One might, for example, perfectly imagine that Maddie's body was concealed in a freezer between the 3rd and the 27th of May. All of this should have been minutely checked. Well, that was the moment when the will to archive the process emerged and I was removed. That the case was actually smothered.

How does that compute? Grime turned up at the end of July.

Did he have just one theory or multiple theories?

This is from an interview with Amaral at the time of the book launch.  Perhaps he isn't so explicit in his book (I will have to force myself to re-read it at some point) but clearly this was his theory at the time:

Correio da Manhã - What do you think happened to the body?

Gonçalo Amaral – Everything indicated that the body, after having been at a certain location, was moved into another location by car, twenty something days later. With the residues that were found inside the car, the little girl had to have been transported inside it.

How can you state that?

Due to the type of fluid, we policemen, experts, say that the cadaver was frozen or preserved in the cold and when placed into the car boot, with the heat at that time [of the year], part of the ice melted. On a curb, for example, something fell from the trunk’s right side, above the wheel. It may be said that this is speculation, but it’s the only way to explain what happened there.

It was one of multiple theories.

Amaral talked of the possibility of Madeleine’s body having been kept in the freezer of an apartment, and then transferred to the boot of the McCann’s hire car months later.

“We had information that they (the McCanns) went to an apartment near the cemetery on many nights,” he told his interviewers. “We tried to find out which apartment it was”, but by this time - almost six months into the investigation - PJ superiors were getting ready to remove Amaral from the case.

Smithman carrying a child in his arms checked his watch after passing the Smith family and the time was 10:03. Both are still unidentified 10 years later.

Is a keen appreciation of the macabre a prerequisite of all policemen then?  Only I don't see it on display in the statements made by the Met on this case.

Have a chat with a retired police officer, you get a different outlook on life.

Amaral's default position appears to grab for the most outlandish and offensive theory - chopped up and fed to pigs, stored in a freezer and then transported as a defrosted corpse weeks later in a hire car, hidden in a coffin with the remains of an old woman, etc.  Not for him the simple "hidden in a bin or down a well", no it's got to have an element of the theatre of the macabre about it.

A policeman learns by experience that a possibility can't be ruled out just because it seems macabre.

No, but a shred of evidence might be nice, like a freezer big enough for storing a body, for starters.

If there's one thing missing from this case it's evidence about anything. Some people fervently believe a child was abducted, but there's no evidence that she was.
