Title: Boris Johnson to shut down Parliament. Privy Council meet Queen at Balmoral.
Post by: Carana on August 28, 2019, 09:57:19 AM
Boris Johnson is planning to ask the Queen to suspend parliament ahead of a new Queen's Speech on 14 October, Sky sources have said.

A government source said the move was to help the new prime minister get on with implementing his domestic agenda.

Hilariously I was listening to IDS on R4 denying the proroguation of Parliament five minutes before it was announced.  It triggered another Brexit row between me and my dear old mum (she initiated, as always!)

Boris does not have to call a general election until it suits him, he will time it so that parliament is suspended over the weeks leading up to  31st October sovthere can be no parliamentary opposition to a no deal Brexit.  Then, after the sunny uplands have been reached it will be election day and all the happy British people will vote for the Tories and he will go forward with a thumping majority, held aloft on a sedan chair made of gold.  That’s the theory anyway..
The first part of the plan has come into effect, as predicted.

It is the elected Government making the request, not the PM. He was elected according to the democratic process set up by his party.

The Queen is often advised on these matters by the Privy Council. I wonder if she will look to them on this occasion?  They're a mixed bunch, but their President is Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The government is not elected. Parliament is the elected body.

So many people claim to want Brexit because of wanting "sovereignty" but are now applauding a PM and Government, that have not faced a general election, as they side step Parliament's rightful ability to effect the Brexit.

The party with the most votes in the last general election forms the government. That is the Conservative party. There is no requirement for a general election if a change in Prime Minister takes place.

Exactly, a government is not elected.

There is no legal need for a general election when there is a change in PM. Agreed. I presume this is because there is a belief that a new party leader will be chosen and they will continue the work set out in the party's manifesto. So.... why the need for a new Queen's speech?

Johnson says in order to set out his plans. There seems to have been a rumour that MP's might move to cancel the Autumn recess, which would be from mid-September until early October. This move adds 5 days to that recess.

We don't have a written Constitution, the country relies on precedent. There is precedent for Parliament to be porouged before a Queen's speech.

I find it quite amusing that those who have done everything in their power to prevent the people having what they voted for are now complaining that Johnson's government is robbing them of their constitutional and democratic rights.

Proroguing Parliament to deliberately prevent Parliament from having the opportunity to use legal and constitional process to delay or stop actions by Government that even their own advisors have admitted will be harmful to the country in numerous ways is undeniably undemocratic IMO.

new

Is this a constitutional crisis? No. Might there be one? Yes. Is this a democratic and political crisis? Absolutely.

The British constitution, in so far as such a thing really exists, gives the executive a huge amount of political control over parliament, largely through its control of parliamentary time. The ability to choose the time of a Queen’s Speech is part of that power. In using it, the government is simply using its discretion. They are using their constitutional position to make life more difficult for those who oppose their policy.

But that is simply a formal view. We now have, effectively, a new government with a quite different policy to its predecessor. It is trying to reduce the amount of time parliament has to rule on whether it supports this new policy. In circumstances in which it seems overwhelmingly likely that it does not. So of course it is a democratic and political crisis.

Parliament will now struggle even harder to assert its control, perhaps through a no confidence vote or legal ways of forcing the government to act. The government may try to frustrate such manoeuvres — delaying an election, for instance until after Brexit, or refusing to seek an extension when mandated - and this would turn the political crisis into a constitutional one.

The fact that the government is able to use its power as it has done, does not make it wise or right to do so, of course.

In the short term, it is true, it is showing determination. It is signalling to the European Union that it cannot expect parliament to stop no deal, so the EU must come to terms. I doubt very much that this will happen, but the government disagrees and thinks there is a good chance if they are firm enough.

And they are also taking advantage of the weakness of their opponents. Unable to agree on how to replace the government, even for long enough to stop no deal, the alliance of remain parties needs to prise time out of this government’s hands in order to pass legislation. Naturally the government is trying to make this as difficult as possible.

They are entitled to point out that parliament has had at least a year to come forward with a policy and has not done so. While everyone is very keen that the Commons should assert its power, the truth is that the more it has asserted itself, the worse things have got. What did they think would happen?

Yet beyond the short run, it is rarely a good political idea to unite your opponents in righteous indignation. Fury may propel them to act together or encourage their supporters to vote together. It could produce an election, and one in which the Conservatives lose more through tactical voting than they gain from leave voters defecting from Labour.

It would also be one in which two central messages against Mr Corbyn — that he isn’t a proper parliamentary democrat and is excessively ideological — are instead turned against Mr Johnson.

Opposition unity might also make it easier for a non Tory coalition to be assembled after an election, whenever it comes, and one which decides on a policy of joining the customs union and the single market, making the no deal pointless.

It is also rarely a good idea to use parliamentary tactics in power that you would not wish to see used against you.

So the Conservative Party may regret later what is doing now, especially if no deal does not go as well as some members of the government expect. But such regret may take a while.

There is a precedent for prorogation before a Queen's speech. Agreed. But for 5 weeks?? I disagree. Isn't it usually less than one week?

MPs have not just been elected to represent Leavers or to deal with Brexit. So by intentionally limiting their chance to debate and effect the final Brexit deal is absolutely "robbing them of their constitutional and democratic rights." He actually knows this and that is why he is claiming that the decision has nothing to do with Brexit. Which is an obvious lie... from our Prime Minister!

It is disgraceful and underhanded and totally in keeping with how we have ended up in this mess in the first place.

Democracy went out the window the moment Parliament went against the Democratic will of the majority.  This is something Theresa May should have done long ago but she surrounded herself with backstabbers so was unable to carry it out.

Looking forward to Independence Day on Halloween!

Ever since the referendum they have been trying to achieve Brexit. The referendum didn't mention any details about times or specifics regarding deals etc so that Brexit is still an ongoing process may be disappointing to some but is hardly undemocratic.

You gotta laugh....

On proroguing parliament (all quotes taken from before today):

Matt Hancock: “To suspend Parliament explicitly to pursue a course of action against its wishes is not a serious policy of a Prime Minister in the 21st century. What kind of message would this send around the world about our values when so many have given so much for the rights of democratic freedom… A policy on Brexit to prorogue Parliament would mean the end of the Conservative Party as a serious party of government.”

Amber Rudd: “It would be absolutely outrageous for Boris Johnson to prorogue parliament. The idea of leaving the European Union in order to take back more control into Parliament, and to consider closing Parliament in order to deal with that, is the most extraordinary idea I’ve ever heard."

Sajid Javid: “We’re not selecting a dictator of our country, we’re selecting a prime minister. You don’t deliver democracy by trashing democracy.”

Michael Gove: “You cannot take Britain out of the EU against the will of Parliament."

Can't stop laughing at John Bercow. Best thing the country has done since 1945 imo and many more countries will follow suit once they summon up the courage to leave the monster.  The European Project is dead imo, all that will be left soon will be the bones of a shattered French and German economy.  Britain will once more be the master of its own destiny.

Brexit has split the country down the middle and caused mayhem in our democracy.  I just hope that it will be worth it in the long run.  That said however, I do agree that there are some individuals who have behaved very badly and should be ashamed of themselves.  Their ill advised attempts to thwart the democratic process has damaged Westminster, it might  welll take years to repair that damage and restore faith in our politicians again.

What a prophet of doom you are. I can't help but wonder if you'll be disappointed if none of that happens. I expect the food and meds will sneak in through the EU's open border in Ireland in the event of a no deal Brexit. Unless, of course, the EU tries to police that border. That would be interesting to watch; the British Army found it almost impossible.

I do have concerns that there will be difficulty in continuing the usual supplies of certain foods and medicines.
Do you believe that "sneaking" supplies through an open border in Ireland will ensure there are no shortages of food and medicines.

Also being ignored is the impact a no deal Brexit will have in Europe.

Germany would face £3.4 billion in tariffs on their exports to the UK, France £1.4 billion and the other EU countries would also face costs. Altogether the UK would pay £5.2 billion in tariffs, but the EU would pay £12.9 billion.
https://www.civitas.org.uk/reports_articles/potential-post-brexit-tariff-costs-for-eu-uk-trade/

Take away the £13 billion the UK pays to be a member of the EU and it's clear that the EU needs to negotiate or be the loser in monetary terms.

I agree that it is inevitable that there will disruptions for a while but it is a small price to pay to get out of the EU State. Having seen the damage the EU has done to Spain for example with its mass unemployment and inflation, I truly believe that we are better out of it. It's not as if we were receiving anything which we haven't already paid for, the UK has been subsidizing basketcase economies in Europe ever since we joined and that included the Republic of Ireland.

Absolutely, it is scandalous that UK farmers are being paid an average of £100 an acre to leave land fallow, what a stupid waste. But then again, the EU stands for greed and waste on a mammoth scale.

That article is just the sort of hysterics we have come to expect. Like everything else in life, there will be winners and losers after Brexit, we can't all be winners. Farmers will be compensated for any serious losses and will adapt in the long term.

Maybe its time UK farmers provided a product for UK consumers. Its crazy that we buy lamb from Australia and New Zealand yet export to the EU. Something badly askew there.

I wonder if a government's forecast has ever come to fruition.

If it's anything like the last time then no. Warnings of doom and gloom by so-called experts seldom come to fruition.  We must embrace Brexit because it will happen regardless of the loonies shouting their mouths off in Parliament Square.

Rather than dismiss the article out of hand it might have been more illuminating if you’d explained which parts of the NFU’s leader’s comments you found to be hysterical.  Is it because she’s a woman?

In light of Johnson's obvious determination has the EU blinked?

Downing Street officials confirmed that the UK talks team will meet their Brussels counterparts twice a week throughout next month in an intensive effort to break the deadlock over the Withdrawal Agreement...

In his first days in Downing Street, he (Johnson) insisted he would not hold any further discussions with EU leaders until they dropped their demand for the backstop..

His go-ahead for fresh discussions will be seen as a sign that the EU has given some indication of flexibility on the backstop issue.

Just a bunch of upstarts led by SNP's Joanna Cherry.  Is she so deluded to think Scotland's highest court which represents a mere 5.4 million people could ever stop BREXIT when only 45% of the entire Scottish electorate voted remain?

The SNP'S electoral majority in Scotland only exists because of complacency among the electorate.

The English High Court has stated that the judiciary should not be involving themselves in political processes. They have stated that the courts have no right to interfere in executive decisions.  The Scottish Courts will have yet more egg on their face by this time next week, their obvious bias will be laid bare for all to see imo.

There is no doubt that  marginally more Scots voted against independence in the referendum.
One of the reasons given by those who advocated the rejection of independence was that Scotland would be no longer in the EU.
Now that Scotland will not be in the EU, much against the vote of the majority of the Scottish electorate, do you perceive any reason for disatisfaction?

There are no valid statistics to say why people voted to stay in the UK. Therefore, you can stop making it up to make you sound like you know what you are talking about.  The FACT IS- those who voted did so  for reasons only they know, this was a MAJORITY. SNP didn't like it so Nik Nik wants another one!  Nik Nik also didn't like the Brexit result so she wants that reversed as well. WTF?  Talk about ignoring the people...

The valid stats for not getting independance is done by voters marking a bit of paper or electronic means and these are counted. Simple!

Invalid statistics is rubbish chat, gossip, guessing why people voted the way they did! simple!

In order to gain why people voted the way they did- is to ask each and every one of them their reasons.

Scotland would be a basket case bankrupt Republic if England hadn't bailed it out but if that's the road Scots want to go then bring it on.  I'm sure the rest of us will survive without whiskey and haggis.  When Scots have to apply for a work permit to work down here then maybe the penny will drop? @)(++(*

A little reminder while I'm on.  Only 45% of the Scots electorate voted remain, hardly an endorsement for the SNP.

Back to Boris before I'm accused of going off topic. He appears to have wooed the north of England now which was until recently a Labour heartland. I have a feeling he is on to a winner and will take the country out of the EU deal or no deal. Personally I prefer the latter approach.

What planet are you on, seriously?

You seem so angry, calm down.
I don't think the supplies of whisky and haggis or even shortbread or irn bru will ever be affected by independence.
If Scots ever have to apply for a work permit to work in England, the NHS will lose a great number of very qualified and experienced doctors and nurses. ( I do hope they then return to Scotland)
Your post borders on the ludicrous IMO.

I thank you and your countrymen for keeping us from becoming a bankrupt Republic or do you mean a banana Republic!

ETA if only 45% of the Scottish electorate vote to remain, does the mean the leave vote was 55% of the electorate?
That seems rather at odds with the facts.

@)(++(* ...that would be right VS but the ile won't last forever apparently.

Seems there are more Scots living and working in England than live in any city in Scotland. It might sound surprising, but according to the latest census figures, there are about 750,000 people born in Scotland who live south of the border. That's more than the population of Edinburgh or Glasgow. I really don't know what would happen to them if Scotland became independent, Scotland certainly has no jobs for them and as it stands, they have no vote hence no say in their own future.

The biggest oil field yet has just begun to flow, began in August !
So the doom and gloom predicted about the oil seems to be very misplaced.

If all these Scots in England will be forced to return to Scotland, does the same apply to the huge number of English people living here?
Will all these folk be forced to leave Scotland.

One newspaper article at the time of the referendum reported that there are half a million English people living here.
I very much doubt any form of repatriation would happen.
Just much of the same misinformation spread about at the time of the referendum.

Interesting time but the big question is why bother?  How would independence benefit Scotland anyway or is this entire debacle just one big ego trip for nationalists?

I believe the big ego trips are those of Boris, Jeremy and certain Westminster politicians.
I can only say there is a growing dissatisfaction with the status quo!

Absolutely no Scots voted to remain in the EU- there has been no such vote.  The majority of those who did vote regarding independence voted to stay in the UK. End of full stop! The SNP has yet to come up with an argument, not a slagging we hate english cr@p, but a proper debate. giving actual figures about how we would be better off. How we would receive and deliver  goods- going around England?- if they chose to close their border.

The oil belongs to the oil companies - just thought I would mention that. The SNP are not investing any money into the economy for industry or NHS or decent  affordable housing. Many young Scots seeking places to become doctors have been refused on the basis that it costs too much to train them!  i tis cheaper to being in from abroad. And did you know the SNP are shelling out over 40million to pay for EU students to study here for their degree?  This country is a shambles and nothing to be 'proud of' as I see it.

Paying millions out on housing and feeding two fat pandas in a luxury cage. not to mention the staff to attend to them, and shelling out millions to 'foreign investors' to buy Scottish land and recieve thousands of pounds  to 'plant trees' . when the Scottish people struggle to find decent housing and some forced to beg at food banks. A total disgrace!  They tax the poor to give to the rich!  yes you better believe it.

Suffice to say I don't share your views.

Some people sometimes feel so superior because those around them treat them, see them as inferiors, so they compensate by trying to undermine others. and some people just cannot handle the truth!

I do not do flag waving ,ground kissing, or bow to anyone. I do not need validation from anyone,or approval from anyone what does this make me? Free to tell it like it is even if it makes people feel uncomfortable and me unpopular.

Look around Scotland a lot of it owned by the Church of England!  and foreign b/millionaires.

The impending prorogation decision by the Supreme Court now consisting of eleven justices will be the most important to come out of a British court for many years. This decision is of such importance that two additional justices were added at the weekend.

In my opinion this will be the decider as to whether we leave the EU on the 31st October or kick the can even further down the road. I really cannot see it rule against the UK government so the cases brought by Joana Cherry and Gina Miller claiming that the prorogation of Parliament was illegal must fail imo. Ruling against the executive at this stage could be the catalyst for events which could not have been envisaged three years ago.

Parliament must learn that it is the servant of the people and not the other way round. MPs have a duty to their electorate, they are not free to espouse privately held opinions and beliefs. Some really need to take this onboard before the next General Election otherwise it will be their last as an elected member. I have a feeling the silent majority are about to make their mark yet again.

The Supreme Court will find in favour of the Government or I'm a Monkey's Uncle.  I think it's obvious Boris lied to the Queen and prorogued to get Brexit through, but I'm not sure that such scheming Machiavellian behaviour is or should be illegal.  They are all at it to some degree or other, it's what politics is, isn't it?

Speaking of Corbyn, I see he is still refusing to reveal his true position over brexit for fear of losing yet more seats to the Lib Dems. Meanwhile Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson has now revealed that she and her party will ignore the 17.4 million people who voted leave and revoke article 50 if they win the next General Election..  God help us all if that shower ever took power.

If the Lib Dems win the next election it will have been because of a democratic process and because their manifesto was a vote winner.  If you don’t like it don’t vote for them.  They won’t win enough seats to form a government anyway  so nothing for you to worry about.

So in the highly unlikely scenario that they won a general election we should accept that result? Why should we when they refuse to accept and implement the result of the referendum? If they can pick and choose which results they accept why can't voters?

In case you hadn’t noticed many people don’t accept the policies of any given government, especially not those in opposition who sit in the HoC.  What do you want to do about it?  Of course voters can change governments every 5 years, do we get a similar opportunity with our membership of the EU?

I don't think there was ever any realistic chance of the Lib Dems forming a government, and I don't think anyone else was really claiming there was. However, you.gov polls now put the Lib Dems second after Conservatives. This is a massive increase in the share of the potential vote and surely, if anything, shows a resurgence in support for the Lib Dems ever since they took such a strong Remain position under Jo Swinson.

Boris Johnson, his glamorous friend Jennifer Arcuri and their global trade trips
September 22 2019, 12:01am,
From New York to Singapore and London’s ‘Silicon Roundabout’, the former model Jennifer Arcuri’s reputation as a tech pioneer rested on her friendship with the PM

The delegates for the high-level London technology trade mission to Tel Aviv had been chosen and the preparations were in full swing when a last-minute call came in to the trip’s organisers from the office of Boris Johnson, the London mayor. The mayor’s office wanted another person to be added to the delegates list for the trade mission, which Johnson was leading. The name of the new person was familiar to London & Partners (L&P), the mayor’s promotional agency, which was making the arrangements.

The former model turned tech entrepreneur Jennifer Arcuri had already been turned away by L&P when she applied to be selected as a delegate for the November 2015 trade mission. Her business did not fit with the theme of the trip.

However, the late request to bring Arcuri along was from the mayor’s office. So L&P followed orders and instructed its travel agent to book Arcuri into the hotel in Tel Aviv alongside the other delegates.

The trip was to be the third foreign trade mission Arcuri had attended alongside Johnson in the space of a year, and yet she had not been eligible to take part in any of them. She was also the only one of the 15 delegates who had been on the mayor’s two previous trips and, indeed, an official told this newspaper, businesses are rarely afforded the privilege of being allowed to go on more than one trip.

Sometimes secrets are written on walls, or in this case computer screens. A simple Google search of the name Jennifer Arcuri instantly shows a tangle of links to the man who is now prime minister.

The pair crossed paths at Tory party conferences, London tech events and a fundraising ball. They mingled in Tel Aviv, New York, Singapore and Malaysia, as well as Arcuri’s spacious top-floor rented flat in Shoreditch High Street, east London. They were close friends.

As well as the trade missions, her companies were given two sponsorship grants by L&P, and she went on to secure a £100,000 grant earlier this year from Johnson’s former ministerial colleague Margot James in the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

However, in his position as mayor, Johnson was bound by the Greater London Authority’s code of conduct “to declare any private interests relating to their public duties and to take steps to resolve any conflicts arising in a way that protects the public interest”. He was also expressly barred from providing any undue benefits to friends.

Arcuri was 27 years old when she first encountered Johnson in 2012. It was a meeting that would shape her career. She had grown up in America and dabbled in fashion modelling and films before heading to London for a one-year MBA course.

Towards the end of her course, she joined the Conservative campaign team seeking to rally support for Johnson to be elected to London mayor for a second term. She was photographed in the blue campaign T-shirt holding up a poster with the slogan “Better off with Boris”.

On Facebook, she also posted other photographs in which she is alongside Johnson on the campaign bus. The caption to one of this set of photos reads: “This is the day Innotech was born.”

Innotech was Arcuri’s first entrepreneurial venture after leaving business school. It was conceived as a series of networking “summits” bringing together young technology entrepreneurs based in east London’s “Silicon Roundabout” — also known as Tech City — with politicians and policy-makers.

The key to it all was Arcuri’s new connection with Johnson, who gave her a big name she could promote as the guest speaker. Johnson went on to appear at four of her events — his mayoral title enhancing their credibility.

Within a year Arcuri was appearing in the pages of The Sunday Times Business section. And she would go on to be cited as one of “the 25 coolest women in UK tech” by the website Business Insider.

The citation said her summits had become well known “thanks to her close ties with London mayor Boris Johnson” who “has repeatedly agreed to speak at the event”.

The mayor’s promotional arm L&P also joined the bandwagon. In October 2013, it gave Innotech £10,000 in sponsorship to advertise its name at Arcuri’s event at the World Islamic Economic Forum event in London, where Johnson was speaking. The following summer, L&P also paid Innotech a further £1,500 to sponsor an event in the House of Commons.

L&P has said it can find no record of whether Johnson was involved in the decision to sponsor Arcuri’s company. Johnson, however, oversaw L&P which he created and his office joint funded.

Arcuri’s company did not become a commercial success in the long term. It never posted a profit and its losses are now about £350,000, according to the latest accounts.

She made no secret, however, of her admiration for Johnson. When attending Conservative Party conference in Manchester in 2013, she snapped a photo of Johnson telling jokes from the podium and posted it online with the caption: “The laughter in the room makes this whole week worth it.”

Throughout 2013 and 2014, Arcuri posted numerous photos from public events of Johnson.

Sources have confirmed that Johnson had also begun visiting Arcuri at her flat in Shoreditch. It was a spacious apartment, which cost £2,600 a month to rent, and had a chrome dancing pole taking pride of place in the living room.

On the floor beneath there was a flat with multiple security doors where people bought and took class-A and class-B drugs. The flat was later closed down in 2016 for three months after a police raid on the drugs den. It is not suggested that Arcuri, the owner or any of the other residents were involved with the activities of the gang.

The building is owned by Chandan Daryanani, who struck up a friendship with Arcuri. Daryanani said he was told by Arcuri that Johnson had visited the property “many times” and added proudly: “He used my property, yeah.” He went on: “She mentioned once he was one of her best friends.”

Another source, who does not wish to be named, said Johnson would visit the flat during afternoon breaks in his mayoral diary. A third source described how Arcuri would hold text conversations with Johnson from the flat.

In November 2014, Arcuri was one of 26 delegates chosen to travel alongside Johnson on a trade mission to Singapore and Malaysia as part of his mayoral export programme. The delegates were selected by a two-person panel comprising of Sara French, the mayor’s export programme manager, and a civil servant from the trade department.

To qualify for the trip, all the delegates had to be able to show that their companies had been trading for at least 12 months. However, Arcuri had applied to join the delegation saying she was representing a video-technology venture, called Playbox, which had been set up just three months earlier.

She was the only one of the 26 delegates who did not meet the selection criteria for the trip, which cost the taxpayer £35,000 overall and was run from City Hall. The delegates paid for air travel to and from the UK, but all the other costs such as meals, hotels and internal flights were picked up by the taxpayer.

French has said — through her new employer L&P — she was not aware of any pressure being exerted to choose Arcuri for the trade mission. She recalls that the decision taken to waive the “trading history requirement” for Playbox was because of “Arcuri’s wider entrepreneurial success”. Playbox folded the following year without filing accounts and Arcuri’s only other company, Innotech, had recorded losses of £41,000 at the time the delegates were being chosen.

During the trip to Israel, Arcuri posted photos of Johnson on social media and expressed excitement at his arrival.

Weeks later Arcuri inquired about joining another Johnson trade mission to New York that was being organised by L&P for the beginning of February 2015.

She was knocked back immediately, however. She was told by L&P that it was not worth applying because the trade mission was for fintech companies and neither of her companies were in that sector.

However, Arcuri turned up in New York while the trip was taking place and was allowed to join events alongside the delegation after receiving permission from Johnson and one of his senior advisers. An internal email, released by L&P, said: “Please though put her [Arcuri] on the list for our tech event in NY. I assume she will stay on and do the TLA/Innovate Finance event.

“She has been speaking to Boris and [names a senior adviser] about her being in NY and they are both, apparently, happy with that. So we should treat her as simply another member of the London tech community.”

L&P told this newspaper: “The record shows the team understood Arcuri would attend some events in New York, and that she had agreed this with the mayor and a senior adviser.”

There was a similar story for the next London mayor’s trip to Tel Aviv that November. By this time Arcuri had set up a new company called Hacker House, which aimed to promote cyber-security.

Arcuri applied to the mayor’s export programme to join the trip but was told that her company was not eligible. She was turned down by French. However, French recalled she was subsequently “informed by an L&P colleague that Arcuri had secured permission from a mayoral adviser to attend Tel Aviv alongside the delegation”.

The spokesman said the adviser was from Johnson’s inner political team. “Sara [French] was asked to arrange Arcuri's hotel, with Arcuri meeting her own costs,” the spokesman added.

The instruction from the mayor’s office had clearly been made at the 11th hour. The booking of Arcuri’s hotel in Tel Aviv was sent to her on the day she flew to Israel, and L&P said she later reimbursed the travel agent for her £1,200 bill.

Her attendance on the trade mission raised eyebrows when the delegates gathered in Tel Aviv. One of the officials from the trip expressed surprise to see her because she was not on the official list. He said: “It’s quite something that she went on so many trips because she was not a serious player in the tech sector. Delegates are normally only invited on one trade mission trip. She spoke about ethical hacking. I’ve never really understood what that meant.”

Another delegate described how Arcuri had tried to grab Johnson’s phone to show how she could make it more secure. The delegate said Arcuri was open about her friendship with Johnson.

It was Johnson’s last trade mission as mayor as he had been re-elected to parliament in the summer and was standing down from City Hall in May 2016.

Arcuri was moving on too. She had left London to live in Cheshire and had met a cyber-security expert called Matthew Hickey who joined her company Hacker House as a fellow director.

By Christmas that year she was pregnant and engaged to Hickey.

Her new business fared no better in terms of profits. Last July the couple relocated to an upmarket district of Orange County, California, even though their two companies, Innotech and Hacker House, now owed more than £1m between them.

However, Arcuri still kept her highly marketable reputation as a top technology entrepreneur that she had built through a mixture of her own tireless self-promotion, Johnson’s endorsement of her networking summits and her attendance alongside the mayor at high-level trade missions.

So in November last year Hacker House applied to the DCMS for a grant under a new initiative called the Cyber Skills Immediate Impact Fund, which is designed to train people in the UK to fend off cyber-attacks. Last January it was given a £100,000 grant.

According to a DCMS spokesman, the grant is for initiatives that are “based and operate” in Britain, and yet Hacker House had been based at Arcuri’s $1.2m (£960,000) new American home in Huntington Beach, southeast of Los Angeles, since June last year and remains there today.

The couple supplied their registered company address in Prestbury, Cheshire, on the application form for the government grant. When The Sunday Times visited the address last month, it turned out to be a property that Arcuri and her fiancé had rented before they left for America.

The owner confirmed that the property had no connection to Hacker House and the current tenant said he occasionally received mail for the company but sent it back to the post office marked “wrong address”.

By law, the company should keep all its registers available for inspection at the address or provide an alternative.

Arcuri also uses the rented home as her correspondence address, which is also an apparent breach of the Companies Act.

Furthermore, it emerged that Arcuri was again given preferential treatment when her company applied for the DCMS grant. Officials agreed to waive a rule that the company had to show the grant did not exceed 50% of its collective income because they felt it was a start-up that merited support.

The DCMS said this weekend it would investigate the circumstances surrounding the grant after being told by this newspaper that Arcuri had moved back to America before the application was made.

On Friday she issued a short statement in response to our article. It said: “Any grants received by my companies and any trade mission I joined were purely in respect of my role as a legitimate businesswoman . . . I am incredibly disappointed that The Sunday Times cannot write about a successful female entrepreneur without smearing her with innuendo based on leaks from City Hall.”

Downing Street refused to comment on the prime minister’s behalf yesterday.

It seems to me that those wishing to remain in the EU will go to any lengths to achieve their objective. The 'smearing' approach was tried against Corbyn but it had the opposite effect to the one intended. I remember that, but they clearly don't.

Perhaps you would like to explain how Boris has been smeared by this article?  Are you claiming it is lies?  Incidentally The Sunday Times supports Brexit.  Further incidentally Jeremy Corbyn has a popularity rating well into minus figures and is one of the least popular Labour leaders ever.

What does this even mean? It sort of sounds like you're saying that people who voted leave, if they hadn't been given a chance to vote leave, would have ended up voting for a right wing Nazi style party. If that is what you're saying... I sort of agree.

I am not claiming people voted leave  because of MPs ignoring the people who were trying to discuss concerns-I am not that presumptious. history has told us indeed shownus that ignoring the voice of the majority ojn towns and villages up and down the country can lead to all sorts of trouble .

What I am  suggesting is:history has told us, indeed shown us, that ignoring the voice of the majority in towns and villages up and down the country can lead to all sorts of trouble. civil war, revolution etc. In this case there was enough dismay to attack the preceived cause of many ills within communities.

The BNP picked up on a few areas:

asylum seekers living the high life in London's top areas costing thousands per month in rent- when firemen.school teachers/police and civil servants could not get council housing or afford private rents or were abole to buy in these areas.

Asian grooming gangs- due to the PC brigade shouting down these claims- many  young women were raped and drugged. even now they are not deemed as  rascial crimes

However, Islamophobiaaaaaa 'new buzz word'  used when complaints were being made regarding anti British behaviour- British flag burning etc

Certain sections of the Muslim commuity living on benefits while spewing anti white [ censored word ]ed- this was not deemed as hate crime or rascist either

Demands for abortions by some cultures of female feotus on the basis that they could not afford dowries- children/women for sale is another way of looking at it.

Some cultures who enslave women and hold them against their free will. i.e forced marriages

FGM being carried out on British children

People trafficking- later day slavery

The impact on housing, schools, hospitals of mass unchecked immgration.

these are some of the issues which were being ignored by MPs/government, and the BNP picked up on them-  it is no coincedence that we saw a rise in an otherwise dormant right wing fascist movement at that time!

This is the horror of it all. We could end up with a fascist state- if we are not careful.

The English High Court has stated that the judiciary should not be involving themselves in political processes. They have stated that the courts have no right to interfere in executive decisions.  The Scottish Courts will have yet more egg on their face by this time next week, their obvious bias will be laid bare for all to see imo.

I believe the "egg on face" is now firmly on the face of one Boris Johnson.

I think if history has taught us anything it is that right wing parties will often demonise minorities, blaming them for all the country's issues, and will stoke the hatred to justify whatever their ulterior motives are. Worse still, people struggling will often believe the lies and exaggerations and pass them on as truth. And of course so much of this is used to direct attention away from the real problems and the real villains. But of course to you... Muslims are the problem. So it's worked on you.

Junker has already hinted that a deal can  still be struck regarding backstop. Has anyone asked why BOJO needed to have the porogation?  No/ oh OK then.

Baz, I am sure it is not intentional that you swipe the rascist card at me by saying "But of course to you... Muslims are the problem. So it's worked on you."

I am very proud indeed of my stance against some muslim cultures within our society who abuse women and claim it as a right under their 'culture' banner.  I played my part in lobbying, with many others, about British school children being mutilated as part of 'a culture'- What did you do? what are you doing? about forced mariages?

I was discussing various cultures some have first cousin marriages where children are born with horrific deformaties and are 'married off' to get a husband into the country this is child abuse and is sickening! someone has to stand up for them as they have no voice.
You can shrugg your shoulders and point fingers but your silence is deafening! If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

I think if history has taught us anything it is that right wing parties will often demonise minorities, blaming them for all the country's issues I agree with this.

villains? What I have said in my previous post is ALL true. That is the point I was making. no one was listening to genuine concerns of the people including police /social work NHS staff reports! hence the BNP got votes they never would have got.

Don't bother dumping other peoples stories onto me. or laying the higher morality card on people for highlighting issues which has affected them! You do not know me at all.

I suppose you would be one of them darlings who want to apoligise to the black (dead for centuries slaves) while at the same time turn a blind eye to the slave trade of today.

Cover your ears- 'illegal immigrants'- are being brought here as slaves! women and children.

Yes, there are some horrible people in the world who do horrible things to other people. Some of them are immigrants, some of them are Muslims... some of them are neither. But you only seem to be interested in immigrants and Muslims just as such a large part of the media want you to be. This is the scapegoating from the right that I mentioned previously. Also there are laws and prosecutions for all the things you mention but then say that no one is doing anything about them, even though that is simply not true.

Anyway, the original point you were making is that all of the things you bring up has lead to the BNP getting votes they otherwise would not have. The BNP has never had less support. They're barely even a political party anymore. So I think you're tilting at windmills.

Peace.

"But you only seem to be interested in immigrants and Muslims just as such a large part of the media want you to be".

It was a lot of years before the msn could print anything about other cultures. So I am not directed  or driven by them as I do not buy newspapers or have social media. I am well travelled and see things at first hand- yes Saudi's really do behead people in public.

My influence is purely from within the cultures themselves. And in particular British born female citizens human rights.(from different cultures) this ofcourse makes me a rascist and islamophobe in your esteemed opinion. You obviously cannot see the contradiction in your blubbering post.

Firstly let me educate you. being part of a 'culture' is not a race! and most of what I write about and get involved with are not specific to muslims  but directly involve some immirants bringing their own culture with them.

The fundamentalist muslims/christians/jews All have their own little 'isms' going on. They should not be treated as protected species. or seen as minorities with special needs. The women and female children who suffer horrendous abuse (I just can't describe on here som eof the horrors) as a result of  being attached to a culture is wholly unaceptable.

You can along with many other celebs and the like claim all immigrants are good for the economy if you like. I SEE ANOTHER SIDE OF THAT COIN. and I am not going to apologise for highlighting them.

So with regards to BNP. ther was a surge  before the brexit vote!

So what comes first the chicken or the egg?

Democracy went out the window the moment Parliament went against the Democratic will of the majority.  This is something Theresa May should have done long ago but she surrounded herself with backstabbers so was unable to carry it out.

Looking forward to Independence Day on Halloween!
