I don't have any issue with Mrs Fenn's accent, but it would appear you feel the need to make a meal out of it.

Most people will understand Queen's English and Oxford English, just they would Glaswegian or Liverpudlian, or a host of other regional accents.

Kate's book makes it clear that Mrs Fenn offered a quicker way to call the police.  That her offer was rebuked does annoy me.  Madeleine appeared to be bottom of the pile of interests, for whatever reason.

could you explain how mrs fenn intended to call the police when she didnt speak portuguese....now I find her offfer quite interesting....perhaps she was going to call 999

none of that has any relevance to kates comment of "plummy" ....i dont but you do.....As far as Gerry was concerned the police had already been called ...imo you just dont seem to be in full posession of the facts.

you posted this..
It's interesting that Kate chose to describe her accent as plummy

could you supply any reasonable explanation of why you find it interesting....

I appear to be in possession of simple facts that you are choosing to ignore or obscure.

Interesting.

The emergency services number speaks English.

The GNR officers we have dealt with in Lagos police station speak English.

You're new to living in the Algarve and an emergency arises – what to do?  Print this list of emergency numbers and information, and keep it handy for immediate help.

Note that if you call the emergency services it might be hard to explain where you live. Keep the geo-coordinates of your location handy or write it on your print-out of this list, so that you can give that to the emergency services and ensure that they can find you fast! Note that most of the responders on the emergency lines do not speak much English.

For instance, when dialling the standard emergency number – 112 – the operator is unlikely to speak English. The caller is reliant on their Portuguese language skills.

Ofcourse there is a very good reason why Kate in her book slags people off by name calling those who offered help.

The fact is Kate n Gerry far from being the  upper middle class they believed they belonged, Kate gave herself a showing up by demonstrating what a common lot the McCanns and Healy's are. They can barely string a sentence together.  That clucking sound with the pulled facial expression still cracks me up. And then I realise she is giving an interview about her 'abducted' daughter...

I am not British, therefore I am not sure how to interpret the innuendos of members. In my country, one would rarely ridicule someone who has suffered a loss, irrespective the circumstances and perception by the media and general public. With the advantage of hindsight, I often wonder how I would have reacted to my child’s disappearance in a foreign country. With all the media coverage, weren't the McCanns perhaps in a dual predicament of being thankful that the press is reporting on Madeleine’s disappearance and keeping it current, but also the harsh reality that she is nowhere to be found and the desperate situation of imagining the worst?

Where did the Portuguese press pick up the word "swingers" from?

Who leaked the contents of Kate's diary to pejorative effect if not the police who had the only copy?

Retired detective Jose Barra da Costa told Portuguese TV that Kate and Gerry McCann were "swingers".

The diary as printed by  TNOTW didn't contain what the police said it contained. Why would they leak an innocuouse narrative when they apparently had a damning one?

LOL at “can barely string a sentence together”.  You really, really have no self awareness at all do you?

What exactly did they have which was more damning than the lies they leaked?
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

Nobody ever said the diary extracts were lies, did they? Private but correct.

Which 'apparently damning' information are you referring to?

Oh dear.  If your inormation is coming from an iMergencies ad, it's no wonder you are getting it wrong.

We have used 112 twice, and on both occasions the operator spoke English.  That could be because 8 years of English is mandatory in Portugal.  More likely in a land of frequent English speakers, an operator who spoke only English would be as useful as a chocolate teapot.

Though it is not explicitly stated in the files, I cannot see a receptionist at the OC getting a job unless he spoke English.

Nurses etc have to take further English, presumably to cover medical terminology.

Emergency ambulances always carry at least one person who can speak good English.  iMergencies is a waste of money if you hope they will answer on-the-spot questions in Portuguese for you.

Of the 3 or 4 occasions we have been in contact withe the GNR and PSP here, the exchange has always been in English.

Not that it matters, the Great Gonçalo was not part of any emergency response team.  And I suspect he knows more English than he claims.
