It has never been explained why Totman never came forward voluntarily to clear this sighting up when Tannerman was all over the papers but instead waited until DCI Redman sought him out.

Am I understanding this correctly?  Some people are suggesting that Totman’s wife falsely claimed it was her husband that the police id’ed as Tannerman?

MET produced an image of Dr T carrying child wearing clothes similar to those worn on hol and he looked uncannily similar to 'Tannerman'.   

You and others keep repeating 'Tannerman' was walking in the "wrong direction" but that's based on your assumption he was collecting and not dropping off.

Mrs Totman never confirmed that OG identified her husband as tannerman,imo the reason is because it wasn't him.
IMO tannerman who ever he was confirmed something to OG that was only known to them and the PJ,ie not in the public domain,this was the revelation moment,once again imo.

I believe the Totmans did come forward in the immediate aftermath saying they thought sighting could be Dr T.

If DCI Redwood wasn't sure that Jane Tanner's sighting was no use he sure went to a lot of effort to persuade people. Dressing someone up in similar clothes and photographing them, not to mention photographing, apparently, the pyjamas the child was wearing plus a blanket (???).
