Why multiple shots when one usually does the job?
A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

They are trained to shoot, not to kill, but to stop & shoot until the threat is over.

The threat wasn't over until she had dropped the knife.

Why police shoot so many times to bring down a suspect

A 2019 study of the Dallas Police Department found that in more than 130 shootings, officers struck their targets 35% of the time.

Most of their shots were misses.

And a 2006 analysis, which examined a number of major metropolitan police department shootings throughout the late '80s and early '90s, found that hit rates rarely exceeded 50%. Some departments, including the New York Police Department in 1990, hit only about 23% of targets.

'No opportunity' to de-escalate: Use-of-force experts say Columbus officer obeyed training in shooting Ma'Khia Bryant

An Ohio criminal-justice professor who studies the fatal use of force by law-enforcement officers didn't hesitate to render an opinion after watching body-camera video of a Columbus police officer fatally shooting a 16-year-old girl Tuesday afternoon on the city's Southeast Side.

"My first impression is that the officer was legally justified in using deadly force," said Philip Stinson, a Bowling Green State University professor who has compiled nationwide statistics on fatal shootings that have led to criminal charges against officers.

"It's a terribly tragic situation, and my heart goes out to the girl and her family and friends," he told The Dispatch Wednesday. "But from looking at the video, it appears to me that a reasonable police officer would have had a reasonable apprehension of an imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death being imposed against an officer or someone else. That's the legal standard."

James Scanlon, a retired Columbus Division of Police SWAT officer who spent 33 years with the division, has since trained officers, and served as an expert witness at trials in use-of-force cases, agreed with Stinson's assessment of the video.

"An officer is justified in using deadly force if his life or the life of someone else is at risk," Scanlon said Wednesday. "Few would argue that there weren't at least two lives there that were at serious risk."

In this case, Scanlon said, Reardon wasn't trying to protect himself, "but to save the life of someone he doesn't even know... It's a shame that no one has recognized that that officer, in all likelihood, saved one or more lives."

U.S. Supreme Court's Graham vs. Connor decision

The legal standard by which an officer's use of force must be measured was established by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Graham vs. Connor decision.

The ruling, issued in 1989, gives police officers significant leeway in the use of deadly force when they perceive that a person poses an an imminent threat to officers or others, and limits the second-guessing of that decision.

The ruling requires that an officer's actions be "judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the 20/20 vision of hindsight."

Any evaluation of an officer's actions must include "allowance for the fact that police officers are often forced to make split-second judgments – in circumstances that are tense, uncertain and rapidly evolving," the court found.

Stinson said Tuesday's shooting is "a good reminder that officers sometimes have to make split-second, life-or-death decisions in violent street encounters... These situations can escalate in a matter of milliseconds, as we saw here."

Given what has happened recently I guarantee that most US police officers will think twice before shooting anyone now unless their OWN lives are threatened. Because at the end of the day, if they don't shoot someone they get to go home and get on with their lives.

I think the US public are going to be the losers in all of this.

This happened to a female Chicago officer a few years ago, she took a severe beating from a suspect & was too afraid to use her firearm in defence.

Here we go....

Chicago police officer says she feared using gun while being beaten

"She thought she was going to die. She knew that she should shoot this guy, but she chose not to, because she didn't want her family or the department to have to go through the scrutiny the next day on national news," Supt. Johnson said.

A good find WS. A police officer isn't paid enough to risk it all for some lowlife.

It was obvious to me yesterday that Police will stop protecting  the public from dangerous criminals and that more lives will be lost.

The Officer would have been criticised had he not intervened in that moment & the sweet, peace loving, only a kid Ma’khia had managed to sink the shank into the pink ladies jugular.

They won't be able to criticise The Police for failing to protect them after all this carry on.

These people, black or white, never seem to think these things through.

Kehlani and Beyoncé react to fatal shooting of Ma’Khia Bryant

“There is no ‘changing’ the police”, said Kehlani in an Instagram post. “There is no adjusting a murderous system. The only answer has always been and will ALWAYS be to ABOLISH the police.”

“When the response to abolishment was, ‘well who are you going to call now?’ HERES YOUR ANSWER. Ma’Khia Bryant called for help. Breonna Taylor, the police were called for help. ACAB. ABOLISH THE f..kING POLICE. Say her name.”

.................

Another celebrity ignoring the fact that even if Ma’Khia Bryant did call the police initially, at the moment the officer attended the scene she was the one acting aggressively, chasing down two women, slashing at one as she fell to the ground & rushing another with a knife directed at her throat.

Gabrielle Union, some other vapid celebrity I've never heard of say's "There is no excuse" for the shooting of Ma’khia Bryant.

Preferring instead to imagine that blissful, police free utopia where civilians are free to solve any disagreements using steak knives.

I am in danger of becoming a bit horrid so I think I had better back off and leave it to you.

I don't feel a moments shame for criticising the deceased knife wielder, nor those celebrities of status who are excusing the girls aggressive & life threatening behaviour just because she was under 18 & black.

Some rationality from a neighbour....

Ma’Khia Bryant’s neighbor insists police had no choice but to shoot

“I believe in truth and facts. Video doesn’t lie,” he said. “She was in full attack mode.”

The girl “was literally aiming a knife at this young lady,” Graham said of the female in pink.

“She needed to be stopped at that point. That young lady’s life was at stake.”

Although another neighbour thinks...

“He should have told her to put down the knife,”

As if she would have dropped the knife & ended her rampage on command had the cop just said 'drop it'.

The officer should have waited, just in case she wasn't really going to stab that women she appeared to be intent on stabbing.

Another anti-police Democrat.

Ohio’s senior senator, Sherrod Brown.

“While the verdict was being read in the Derek Chauvin trial, Columbus police shot and killed a sixteen-year-old girl,” Senator Brown tweeted. “Her name was Ma’Khia Bryant. She should be alive right now.”
