Title: THE FRONT DOOR - WAY IN AND WAY OUT for abductor
Post by: sadie on July 20, 2013, 01:02:31 AM
For the only walk/drive back to 5A or any of the Tapas 9 apartments using the front way in, one had to enter via the car park entrance from the main road as shown in this photo.

This is the view of the front door

Can you see it?   LOOK REALLY HARD

Can you see the front door?  it's right in the middle of the photo

No-one can see it; cos it is recessed back completely out of sight for all the walk across the car park, right from the car park entrance to the open end of the walled paths.  This is the route that everyone has to take  to the centre of the building where starts the end of the paths that radiate out to all the apartments.

This is the view of the front door taken from the very end (dead end) of the walled pathway.  As can be seen the front door is very well recessed back and in the dark.    In this photograph the door well is slightly illuminated by photographers lights, but the whole area is very dark.  Not illuminated, as in Pat Browns photograph.  That search light was fitted much later (in time for Pat Browns photograph?)  And the surrounding trees cut down to give a clear view (for Pat Browns photograph?)

One thing that is not universially understood on the forum, is that as these apartments are built in a slope:-

The ground of the walled pathway is at a lower level than the ground in the car park.  From memory, by the front door well and bedroom window, the wall is about chest height.    Whilst on the car park, ground is higher up that slope, so the wall is about thigh height.  Therefore Madeleine would have had to be handed UP to bundleman on the car park side of the wall, rather than down.

Maybe I should invite you to come here so you can check with your own two little eyes and walk the walk to really feel the absurdity of some statements that you are taking second or third or whatever hand....

On May, 3 2007 nobody took a child trough a window from the apartment 5A before 22:00 h. That I know a 100%. There are witnesses and if the case ever goes to court they will appear.

I don't understand what you mean

It is perfectly possible for a witness to say something did not happen

Say,  for instance,  the house opposite me was burgled last night,  via the kitchen window

I was sitting in my garden between 9 and 10pm and was looking directly at the house opposite with a clear view of the kitchen window,  and if someone had broken in through it I could not have failed to see them

So,  as a witness,  I can tell the police that the burglary definately did not happen between 9 and 10pm

A witness who can say something definately did NOT occur  is  valuable

Point is though Icabodcrane, no innocent bystander was sat watching the front bedroom window as it was obscured by trees.  In any event if that had ocurred Senor Amaral would have known about it.

This video library on this forum has a link to the Dispatches  TV programme

In that programme a number of experts visited the McCann apartment and considered the possibility of someone entering the apartment through the window

They pointed out that the window was overlooked  ...  and turned to point out the apartment block directly opposite

They concluded that no-one would try to use the window as a consequence of the visibility

It is perfectly possible that someone was sitting on the balcony of one of those apartments on the  night Madeleine disappeared

- But who are the witnesses that Luz refers to who can definitely exclude it? I have found no statements to that effect in the files.  Indeed, it would have been helpful as it would have excluded the window as a point of entry/exit.

- If "witnesses" had been staring intently at that window for an hour, they should have been thoroughly questioned.

You don't need to  'stare intently'  at something in your line of vision in order to notice if something happens

As to there being no witness statement from anyone who may have been overlooking the front of the McCann apartment from a balcony opposite,  we are aware that there are a number of witness statements that do not appear to be in the translated files

I am not saying that someone definately  was   sitting on their balcony that night,  and that they would have noticed if someone was breaking into the McCann apartment  ...  I am just saying that it  IS possible

I just don't think that ridiculing Luz is appropriate or supportable in this instance   (  not that I t think ridiculing another is  ever appropriate or supportable  )

THis thread is not about the window, altho the [ censored word ]s will try to swing it.  It is about the FRONT DOOR.  Could you see it?

There has to be some reason why the front door is being totally ignored by the [ censored word ]s and why the window is being promoted.  All the time they go on about the window.

THat front door was completely hidden, out of sight around the corner in a recess, in a place that nobody walked past and nobody overlooked.  NOBODY   NOBODY, at all, walked past or overlooked that front door

To remind the [ censored word ]s/sceptics.
In the immediate weeks before the abduction there were at least two burglaies in that block.  One in Mrs Fenns, just days before and one in an apartment above Mrs fenns.  In both cases entrance was via the front door, without damage to the door.

I've been and walked the walk.

Please stop the lies.

It's you that is lying. I've only allowed myself to exaggerate the distance between OC and the front door of 5A, just to make you reflect that there was no way  the children could be within hearing distance from where their parents allegedly were dining.

But you post here all sorts of "crap" and don't have any sort of ethical or moral worries for the fact that your lies are detrimental for other persons images

If as you say you have been here you know you are just propagating the lies the McTeam have been feeding the UK media for so many years. You sound worse than their appointed PR, but at least he (they) was being payed to fabricate  all the falsehoods the Brit journos have been feeding the innocent people, in order to get into their pockets under the false pretense they were looking for their child.

So it's you and your acolytes that should stop lying. As Britons you should be ashamed to help cover up the demise of a poor 3 year old innocent child, just because you have been fed that the parents were "nice people". If they were nice people they wouldn't have boycotted the search for their daughter - for me they are as good as those assassins that kill innocent people to rob them.

Your continuous argumentation that the investigation in Portugal was....I refuse to use the terms you apply...it's just to obfuscate the fact that both the family, friends and even the UK authorities were the main responsible for the necessary archiving of the process.

The McCann spent about 2 years saying they wanted (yeah, sure!!!!) a review of the process but they never asked for a re-opening of the investigation (which they could have done at any time just voluntarying to co-operate with the portuguese authorities), and despite the folklore the SY has been making on the media the fact is that they are further back than the PJ was when the case was archived.

If you care for the McCann, tell them to free themselves and to tell the truth - maybe they are innocent, but as it is they sure as hell look more guilty than Casey Anthony.

Back in 2007 the childrens bedroom window could not be seen from across the road because of overhanging tree branches.  These trees have since been removed in order to improve security.

PS. Sorry Sadie.  I know this thread is about the hidden door but I cannot allow a non truth to go unchallenged re the visibility of the window.

There is also the evidence from the six (?) British families who came forward to the UK police to report sexual assaults on their children in their beds - all whilst they were on holiday and all within a few miles of PdL - where no sign of a break in was evident.   Therefore it's not unreasonable to assume that obtaining keys was not a problem for the would-be intruder.

At first Amaral himself listed 'entry via the front door with a stolen key' as a possibility, but then apparently shelved the idea.     One can only speculate as to why.

'The fool was right'.

Lovely.

Just to remind, if need be, it was the view of the PJ that the Mccanns were involved in Madeleine's disappearance, not just him.

A further reminder if need be, it was the UK police who told the PJ  to investigate the Mccanns.

Another myth to dispel yet again. Madeleine was searched for extensively, but no traces forensically or otherwise were found.

Agreed, John, at the car park entrance, but only glimpses otherwise.  Twas very gusty (20mph gusts) and the trees would have been waving around quite vigorously

The land was rising in a Northerly direction and the opposite blocks were well raised relative to OC.  No views from the flats opposite until the Pat Brown Fiasco.  I had a good look.

I find the whole thing most odd, Sadie.

The family did initially assume that someone must have entered (and possibly exited via the window) as Kate and Gerry stated that the shutter and window were found open.

Fine, that was their apparent initial impression and it needed to be checked out. If that turned not to be feasible, then there were the two other points of entry. I haven't found the results of the police reconstruction attempting to get in/out of the window, so I've no idea whether that was deemed feasible in the end or not.

I don't totally discard any of the possibilities (and someone could have gone in one way and out the other), but the front door seems an obvious choice. Crouching slightly to get in via the patio door would seem feasible, but to then carry out a child via that way seems hugely risky.

As far as I know, that supposed detail was in an Express (or other tabloid) article at the time and may not be true.

That she had been burgled the week before is in her statement.

No Anne the British Consul told Kate about these occurrences which IIRC were discussed at what were regular meetings with tour operators which he attended.    There is no way Kate is going to fill pages of her book with downright lies about the British Consul or about the Leicesteshire police - to whom those parents came forward.  Neither is she going to lie about the crimes being reported to the GNR - when she would know that if they didn't happen they would be able to prove it.

If what she said is not true then she would be exposing herself to the British Consul, the UK Polce and the GNR as a massive liar!!    Anyone who thinks she would be so stupid as to do that, in writing in a book, knowing what the consequences to herself would be - is living in cloud cuckoo land.

The British consul is no more in charge and why would the GNR officers read "Madeleine" ? Mrs McCann is so vague that denying wouldn't be difficult : Ah, X told me, I thought he meant, etc.
There's no Portuguese file about this and on this forum we've insisted on the basic necessity to refer to official files.
You can argue that Mrs McCann heard that..., but repeating triple hearsay as if it were a fact isn't acceptable.
I really doubt that the LC would have sent its files to the McCanns.

Kate states in her book that she read these reports of abuse of British childen in the files.   If you think she would so publically lie about that knowing it would expose her to the police as a huge liar  -  then that's your prerogative.    However, IMO such a belief can only be sustained if all semblance of common sense, logic and reasoned thought is removed from the equation and we accept that Kate McCann is a brain dead idiot.

BUMPED O.P.

With the front door being so obviously the best way in for a burglar/abductor

Why do you think that all the attention is being taken away from the front door?

Pray tell what do you mean exactly by 'Why do you think that all the attention is being taken away from the front door?

She even quotes a short passage from a letter from a distraught parent to the GNR. What did she do, invent it?

Wheres the quote? What benice IIRC or someone else posted earlier as a quote wasnt one, it was KMs words

Sorry was from the other thread about getting in and out of the flat

Quote from: Luz on Today at 12:12:09 PM

Not in Portugal.

Benice said, quote
The GNR records would prove you wrong.  The crimes were reported to the police.

This is an extract from a letter of complaint written by one of the parents to the GNR.

It is difficult to see with this lack of investigation or interest how a profile of this man can be built up.  It did not appear to us that there was any great incentive or determination to find the offender and bring him to justice................Furthermore, it could all have been so much worse......indeed this man could go on to do much worse to another child if he's not stopped.

That letter was sent to the GNR six months before Madeleine was abducted - and will be in their files.

And then there were the trees surrounding Block 5.  Half have been cut down now.  Just the eastern half where the Pat Brown photograph was taken.  Those on the western half had exactly the same trees but they remain standing.  They were NOT cut down

Why do you think that all the attention is being taken away from the front door?

I didn't realise it was being taken away!

In the space of a week we have gone on this forum from believing the patio door was used (until we took into account Rachel's statement where she said the shutter was down on the patio door) to the window (except no evidence was found that it was open or that it had been used and that it would attract attention with someone leaping through and out of a window).

In fact was it not you ( i can't recall now) who said the door wouldn't have been used as it would have been impossible for an abductor to see if someone was watching him, which is why the shutters were used?

Are we now saying it is the front door with a key?

I ask the same question. If an abductor had used a key then either he has had one for a while for that apartment (which would be a huge coincidence that he had a key to the one apartment where a child was staying unsupervised?) or one was stolen or removed to be used or copied?

Is it viable that an abductor would rmeove a key, get it copied and then put it back? I think that is too risky.

Were any keys reported stolen or missing? Did anyone come forward in PDL to say they had copied a key like this one (which appears to be very distinctive)?

Yes; quite a viable proposition.  Happens all the time in burglaries all over the world.

Were any keys reported stolen or missing? Did anyone come forward in PDL to say they had copied a key like this one (which appears to be very distinctive)?

None of us can answer those questions as we were not the police doing the original investigation.  As for any locksmith voluntarily coming forward to say he had copied such a key, probably unlikely - we have been led to believe that there is a distinct uneasiness among the Portuguese populace to fully trust the police.  Such an attitude is not confined to Portugal, however.  Many people don't wish to "become involved with the police."  So no - I don't expect anyone to have volunteered that information, but I do wonder if the police even asked the question of the public.

So are you suggesting that the abductor watched the Mccann's after their arrival and decided he must use a front door key if he wanted to abduct their child?

In that case he had what 4 days, to note the McCann's were there with children, then note their night time activities and leaving their children alone, find out where the keys were kept, take one without being seen - and run the risk of not knowing when the keys might be used thus potentially alerting MW staff to a key being taken, then get one copied and then put it back, again whilst not knowing when or how often the keys would be used or checked?

They did not need to go to the police. Given the McCann's have had their own private PI's for the last 6 years on the case one would presume that this is an area that would have been given much attention in their work.

So why haven't we heard of anything concrete in this regard?

You would expect the PI's have to have released either that info to the media, or indeed passed it on to the police, wouldn't you?

Equally the UK media has had an insatiable appetite for McCann related stories, do you not think someone with a key missing or had copied a key would have come forward to take Murdoch et al's shilling?

Can you imagine the splash in the UK papers had someone been discovered who had lost their key to 5A or someone who had copied a key just like it, thus validating the McCann's story?

It is inconceivable to believe the McCann's would keep such a key piece of evidence, which supports their claims, quiet.

How many burglaries around the world have the same level of media spotlight on them as the McCann case?

I think it is eminently viable, indeed probable, that had such a scenario unfolded someone by now would have come forward to admit having lost a key or cut one like it, and given the media's interest in the case and support of the parents, it would have been reported in the press.

Despite the doubts you have i would also think that if such evidence was presented to them the PJ would have no choice but to reopen the case if such evidence was in the possession of the PI's or the media.

Given we have heard nothing in this regard it must be safe to assume no one has come forward becuase a key was not taken.

The way in through the door with a key generates a limited number of suspects whereas the shutters/window way in generates an infinity of suspects.
Keys are always in restricted number and investigating each key's owner or depositor and Lagos key maker would likely lead to a suspect.

But Portuguese police have always believed any intruder would have used the FRONT DOOR to enter, knowing the McCanns would never use it that night. He could also have escaped through the shuttered front window to the children's bedroom. For this he would have needed a KEY to the front door. The one the McCanns had for the Ocean Club apartment is known in the locksmiths' trade as a "crucifix key"—and is very unusual because it has four sides. Experienced British locksmith John Reeder told us the key used to take us into the flat yesterday is almost certainly a copy. He said: "Most locksmiths would not be able to copy it without great difficulty. The one in the picture is almost certainly not the original."

And why is it considered suspicious that the holiday makers would be given a copy key?

Having rented my own house abroad out we had a copy cut for tenants and kept the original. You do not rent out property and only have one key!

In the event of these MW apartments wouldn't it be normal for MW to keep the orignal or indeed for the owner of the apartment to have the original?

All apartments have multiple keys for owners, staff access and possibly cleaners.

I see nothing suspicious in that.

On the other hand had someone actually reported a key lost or stolen then that would be suspicious..

Title: Re: THE FRONT DOOR - WAY IN AND WAY OUT for abductor

In the family story, the door and the window were open, then, as both open door and window didn't make sense, the door was closed in the police story.
An intruder, who enters using a key, might take it out of the lock, but doesn't lose time shutting the door both after entering and exiting, a fortiori if he carries on his arms a 15kg child.
When it was proved that nobody passed through the window, then the door would be opened with a key copy, turning the window into a red herring.

Spot on Anne

Is this why the door has been repeatedly ignored?  Does it implicate someone with OC connections?

The door in and out is the easiest route, the fastest and the most hidden.  Out of sight and in darkness.  No-one passes.  Was the Amaral theory so progressed, about Kate and Gerry dunit, that he didn't want it disrupted?  So ignore the front door?  Or was there some other reason for pushing the window and ignoring the door?

At least two other burglaries in that block in the preceding weeks.  Both in via a locked front door, with no damage to the door, or lock.  Why were they ignored?

Alot of people worked there and couldnt do their job if they werent given a key!

What do you suggest? Every worker be let into flats by some key holding manager? going around the ocean club unlocking doors in case an employee is a potential abductor of children?

ETA Even if NO ONE knew the code to the safe, how does that make anything any better security wise? All they to do is get the key copied as it would have been in their possession.

This whole hypothetical speculative  exercise isnt really based on any hard (or half hard) facts.

none of us suggest that Red

But the fact is that if the front door was used, with no damage to it, then it is likely that the abductor or the lifter had something to do with OC ... cos a key or a copy must have been used to enter.

Even if it was only a copy, someone attached to OC had to "borrow" the key to arrange the copy

Too many assumptions and accusations.

No evidence the front door was used in the hypothesis
No evidence there was a lifter and/or an abductor
No evidence a key was copied
no evidence any key was missing
No evidence any employees were criminals or suspected to be by the investigating police

I have no idea if the PJ looked into this. Not seen anything in the files. Then I havent read every page.

Eta if the front door was used, there is no reason to make a racket and open the window and shutters, potentially attracting attention, instead of just exiting straight back out the same way, quietly, in the dark

they imagined they wanted to abduct a child in the future who might stay in 5a?

not enough laughing smilies on here

MORGAN: Do you know that yet? Do you know -- is there any evidence how this person came in the room?

G. MCCANN: I mean no doubt, there are a number of options. And --

MORGAN: No, actual evidence. There's nothing they could find to say this is unequivocally how this person came in?

G. MCCANN: No. I mean, it's possible they came through the window. They could have come through the patio doors, although that was in sight of where we were dining. So I think that's probably less likely. For all we know, they could have had a key, you know, lots of people stayed in that apartment over years to the front door --

This interview was in 2011. 4 years after the scientific police found no evidence of using the window, Mr McCann has still some affection for the ex broken shutters. The patio door went to the bin because it questions their watching it. Doesn't the key lead sound promising ?

If I can go back to the post for a minute which recalled Rachael's remark claiming that the patio door shutter was down or closed.   It is possible the shutter was down which covered the fixed panel adjacent to the patio door.  Again I will point out that had the patio door shutter been down the McCanns would not have been able to get into the apartment using the patio door.

Which could be a valid interpretation had Rachel not specifically said:
Quote
The window shutters of the McCann's apartments were closed. The patio door that they used to enter the apartment also had its shutter closed. In order to enter they had to raise the shutter.

Which goes into detail about the patio door being covered by the shutter.

And as for the copy key isconcerned, lets not forget gerry mccanns wild claim on cnn in his interview with piers morgan that any number of holidaymakers staying in 5a over many years went back home with the  key to 5a

I have done that, Red, although in recent years my key has been of the plastic type (like a bank card).   I have also lost my key whilst on holiday.

more likely tho, that someone to do with OC was involved.

To me it sounds promising too, Anne, in view of how difficult it would have been to enter 5A by any other means than the front door.

With a key, that was so quick and easy ... and safe.  Both in and out.

But a safety route out had to be ensured, in case anyone came and blocked his / her exit via the front door.   Hence the window and shutters being opened.

I thought we had covered this. The opening of a window and shutter from inside was incredibly risky to the point of being amateurish.

Once inside the apartment, an abductor raising the shutter from inside would have no way of knowing who was walking past when he opened the shutter.

He could have been spotted there and then, for what? An escape route?

That's a huge risk given people were backwards and forwarding all the time across that car park.

Plus of course given the timings he would have had to:

Enter the apartment
• Sedate all three children - in the dark
• Select Madeleine as the victim - in the dark
• Open the shutters and window - if he used the front door to enter
• Pick Madeleine out of her bed - in the dark
• Turn her round so that her head is now to his left, rather than to his right,
which is the way he would have approached her in the bed.
• Exit the apartment, either through the opened window and shutters, or
through the front door, which he must then close silently behind him.

All in the time from gerry leaving the tapas to Jane leaving 5 minutes later.

Good points Albertini and you have also given me an idea.  Could the shutter have been raised to allow whatever light there was into the bedroom so that the abductor could see what he was doing?

Rachael is totally wrong in her assertion that the McCanns could raise the shutter in order to get in by means of the patio door.  The patio door shutter could not be raised from the outside using the pull strap.  If it wasn't locked down it could be raised manually but someone would have to have held it up on the outside while a second person opened the door and went inside to pull the strap.

Once inside the apartment, an abductor raising the shutter from inside would have no way of knowing who was walking past when he opened the shutter.

Nobody walked past.  Was a dead end .  Only led to the Mccanns front door.   If someone by a great fluke saw the abductor, he could still flee thru the patio door.  So a non-runner.  Sorry Albertini

He could have been spotted there and then, for what? An escape route?

I believe that there were at least two peeps.  One was the lifter and the other bundleman.  Madeleines head changing arms supports this belief of a pass over from one person to the other [along with other things covered before]  Bundleman would have been keeping watch on the outside and handing things thru the window BUT not Madeleine.  I think she was walked out thru the front door by the lifter before being passed to bundleman.  The front door; the fastest, the safest and the easiest route.

An escape route was necessary in case someone came in via the patio doors.  Then the lifter would be unable to go thru the sitting room to the front door.

That's a huge risk given people were backwards and forwarding all the time across that car park.

Not so, if someone outside was watching out

Plus of course given the timings he would have had to:

Enter the apartment
• Sedate all three children - in the dark
• Select Madeleine as the victim - in the dark
• Open the shutters and window - if he used the front door to enter
• Pick Madeleine out of her bed - in the dark
• Turn her round so that her head is now to his left, rather than to his right,
which is the way he would have approached her in the bed.
• Exit the apartment, either through the opened window and shutters, or
through the front door, which he must then close silently behind him.

1)  It is my belief that someone gave all three a light sleeping draft, either at tea time ... or via a doctored sweetie or drink.
They were all extra tired that night.  Too tired for their play on the slide with the other kids.
2)  Opening the shutters and window would not take long.  The shutters might have been lifted from outside by bundleman and if the window was only slid shut, that too
3)  With the light from the sitting room shining in it wouldn't be difficult to spot Madeleine; she was the only one in a bed.  Could even have spotted her by the moonlight.
Wonder if Madeleine was chosen because of the ease of silently lifting her from her bed, rather than having to struggle with lifting a sleeping child from a small cot?
4)  Now why would an abductor turn her round so that her head faced the opposite direction?  Doesn't make sense Albertini, no need to do it and s/he wouldn't have done it.  Simples.
She was passed to bundleman; that is why her head was on the opposite arm. Think about it Albertini.
5)   No emergency ... no need to escape ... so s/he walked out of the front door and probably immediately passed Madeleine over.
Turned round, pulled the door to, using the key ... virtually silently, having turned the key.

So no finger prints at all.  Only the key touched.

All in the time from gerry leaving the tapas to Jane leaving 5 minutes later.

Could have done the lot easily in two minutes.  I tried a similar exercise and it took me less than a minute ... in and out by the front door.  Easy.

Was someone from OC involved?
Title: Re: THE FRONT DOOR - WAY IN AND WAY OUT for abductor
Post by: Carana on July 22, 2013, 01:09:12 PM
I was under the impression that this type of key is very common in Portugal. If so, locksmiths would presumably be equipped to make duplicates within a short space of time.

If someone did surreptitiously get a duplicate made, it needn't even involve an OC employee. I know of burglaries committed by people who had taken keys out of jacket pockets or bags whilst having lunch or whatever, had them duplicated and replaced. The victims never noticed a thing... until they got home. Then, of course, a huge hassle trying to claim on insurance as there was no sign of a break-in.

Some people are saying that there is no evidence that keys had been reported as lost or stolen... but is there any evidence in the files that the police asked?

If that type of key is indeed very common, a locksmith would have no particular reason to remember duplicating an "unusual" key... It would be just one more in a day's work. It would still have been worth checking with them though, IMO, in case they'd noticed anything strange about the person requesting it or if they'd noticed anything specific about the key (scratch mark or anything else), or even if they offered other services and only one or two people had requested a duplicate in recent weeks or months.

It is also possible that a previous employee who had had access to keys could have made duplicates. Were previous employees checked out? If so, did any of them have a criminal record or were known to associate with those who had?

In view of the press leaks, would an employee have felt comfortable reporting a suspicion about a current or previous colleague, or family member or friend? Without even suspecting someone, were they questioned about any colleagues who had keys returned later than necessary? Reasons could be perfectly innocent, obviously, but  were any questions asked about whether any such incidents had occurred?

They don't have had to use a locksmith, to duplicate the keys.
If it is a regular and lucrative business, whats to stop them doing their own. Key Cutters/Duplicators, can be bought, by anyone.

The cheapest and easiest way to duplicate a complex key such as that is to make a simple sand casting of it.  Tells you how to do it at home on the internet.

That key has a rough finish and looks like a copy.  A copy made by casting it

After casting, some filing or simple machining would very likely be needed to tidy up the fraze.

{I worked in a foundry for some months as part of my training.  Very hot and interesting place, pouring boiling metal and sparks flying everywhere.    Rough and ready ... but people with hearts as big as buckets worked there.  Loved them all.  An experience that I will never forget]

But, in order to make a copy, one first must get hold of the original to make the mould.  So, someone with attachments to OC involved?

Dont know if there are many foundries on the Algarve, but someone working at such a place would be able to make copies without any trouble at all.  And at no appreciable expence

Matts windows are somewhere near that car, betwen W and thev lobby, but he would have turned off first to his front door, so he would never catch sight of Madeleines window [the pink lines are possible routes to the other tapas front doors.
Likely actually that they would have turned off evern earlier becos peeps are lazy and take the shortest route when walking.

Nope, not buying it. My picture shows the route Matt would have to walk across from the road through the car park to get to the point of your picture.

On his way there (or indeed back) he must have zero peripheral vision if he cannot see the window to 5A.

On the overhead picture the opening for the car park looks narrower than the car!

Exactly, so it stretches the bounds of credibility that Matt would not have looked in that direction when checking his own apartment.

And given we are told everyone was checking, then it's a stretch to think no one walking across the car park entrance didnt look in that direction either.

Why would they? They weren't expecting burglars or kidnappers, they just wanted to make sure that the kids were sleeping.

Note that from point E the 5A window is very hard to see, and the angles from the path in point A, B, C, D are between 50º and 130º ...

And 50º are just the limit of human binocular vision, although the visual field is uneven, it is not uniform and has its maximum definition in its central part.

Yes this is perfect example of 'hindsight' which sceptics use so often.   If Russell and Matt returned together they would most likely be chatting as they walked.    Also they would all be in a hurry to get back to their meal which they had interrupted to make their checks.   And it wasn't broad daylight either as shown in that photograph - and so it is totally misleading.

If the shutters had been open and a curtain flying and flapping (whooshing !) in the wind, at least one person would have seen or more likely heard. As nobody did, the probability is there was nothing to notice.
But there was a rub ! Mr Oldfield couldn't have seen the shutters either closed (ruining Ms Tanner's sighting) or open (ruining his reputation of responsible person). Mr Oldfield was horribly stuck and the only way out was to enter a flat where he never had been.
Gosh, I pity him when he was asked about the bedroom, he couldn't but describe his own, hoping they were all equal (and showing that he likely never stuck his ear against the unique McCann window.
Of course his complacency and his dignity couldn't go up to saying he hadn't seen Madeleine. So Mr Oldfield had to pretend he had done a visual blind check or rather a check on silence ! The cruel and unexpected detail is there was a bed looking like a battlefield in this bedroom and he couldn't miss it, even if he didn't enter ! The devil was in this bed.

Thank you Heri for posting that.   The first piccie is the one which IMO shows how easy it was for anyone walking across the carpark in the dark and in a hurry, not to notice anything about the window at 5A - unless they had some specific reason for looking across at it, which of course they hadn't.

Another example of comments made with the benefit of hindsight.  As Matthew couldn't see into the future - I don't suppose for a minute that he went into 5A thinking ''I'd better make a particular note of everything I can see in the children's bedroom, because later on the police will be asking me questions - and I need to convince them I was here'    All he was there for was to make sure the children were asleep.   He was listening rather than looking.

IMO if Matthew had given a detailed perfect description of the bedroom then you would have a valid point - because that would have been suspicious.

He went inside because he had offered to do Kate's check for her and that's how she did her check.  It was sorted before he left the table that he would be going inside - in the same way Kate would have done if she had gone.    How anyone can read anything weird or strange into something so simple and straightforward is a mystery to me.

Your knowledge about "what the McCann would have done" is a mystery. There's nothing like an inside request in any of the group's statements to the police. As a matter of fact Mr McCann said in a documentary he wouldn't have looked inside of the bedroom if the door hadn't been wide open and Mrs McCann, in another documentary, says she would have left, all quiet, if the door hadn't been wide open.

Quote from Matthew Oldfield's rogatory statement - re the check.

"Erm, so I went to check on G**** and I stood up and Russell stood up and said he was going to go and check as well and Kate stood up and I said, you know, do you want us to go and check on, erm, do you want me to go and check on your kids, erm, and she said yes. And I think I offered at that point just because we had been together all week and we had similar routines and it just kind of seemed like a nice thing to do that would save her a journey back up and, you know, it may or it may not have been different. But, erm, I said that and she said yeah fine and she said that the patio door was open and go in through there

One year later ! Who will believe that ? None of them mentioned it to the PJ in their first and second statements. And :
The "way Mrs McCann would have done" was 1) the shortest way (but for Mr Oldfield the longest) and 2) just listening (which Mr Oldfield did).
No logic in this.

I presume the reason they didn't mention it was because they weren't asked about it.  Why would that question be asked when it is a foregone conclusion to any sensible person that Kate would have told him that the patio door was unlocked when she was accepting his offer to do her check for her.

I'm pretty sure that if Matthew had offered to check just by listening at the window Kate would probably have said... 'No it's OK - I'll go myself..' because the McCann's way of checking was to go into the apartment.    Even after Matthew had listened at the window earlier and told the McCanns all was quiet -  Gerry still went to do his check from inside the apartment  - just a few minutes later - for the same reason.

Are you Mrs McCann, Benice, always sure of what she would think, say, advise, do, hear, etc.
The fact is they used the risky but shorter way to just listen : both McCanns say they had a look thanks to an open door (and in her case thanks to the wind) !
The 9:30 check would seem just highly illogical if it didn't interestingly show how Mr Oldfield was manipulated.

The problem with thos pictures is that you are presuming you go from the door of each by teleportation across the car park to the road.

You are also presuming that people do not move their heads when they walk.

That isn't the case.

As you walk across the car park the angle of the window to 5A opens up so that as you are walking into and out of the car park the window is in view.

This is particularly relevant to Matt Oldfield. He went to the next apartment and i find it impossible to believe when walking to his own apartment next door he did not look at the shutters of 5A.

What adds to the impossibility is the fact that white walls and shutters provide a constant contrast, which would be broken and noticeable if the shutters were, as descibed, "fully up". The black contrast from the bedroom and the white frame contrast of the exposed windows against that blackness from the window would be hugely noticeable and draw ones attention to that contrast.

Further to that as they were checking each others apartment it is impossible to believe they did not glance over to the windows and shutters. After all we are led to believe a few minutes earlier Matt did a visual check at the shutters.

It is also impossible to believe that after going to his apartment and walking past the shutter at 5A and then performing the room check (which coincidentally he did not see Madeleine) and noticing there was more light in the room this did not prompt him, subconciously, to recall what he had seen a few minutes earlier on his walk past the shutters of 5A.

It stretchs credibility.

Of  course it does Albertini.  Along with many many other examples (far worse ones). That anyone can assert that every person at all times  looked straight ahead and never moved their heads or eyes or wouldnt have noticed flapping curtains or the changed contrast as you say, is very presumptious. Of course, they may have looked and seen NOTHING different! lets face it, if there was an abduction, there is absolutely no proof it happened at 9.15 and not, e.g. 9.45

No I'm not Anne.   It's simply a matter of common sense IMO.

I'm not sure how Matthew Oldfield offering to do Kate's check for her unprompted  - is HIM being manipulated.

Sadie

Point P is where the steps are to get down to the passage to then get to the main entrance lobby?
Sorry Carana.  Been busy and only just picked this up.

Sorry but I never stepped inside OC building to check that.  I walked the walled path and looked at the window and door, but never touched anything.

Stairs are expensive things to build and it is my guess that one set of steps would have serviced as many flats as possible.  I had always thought that they went up from the lobby, but not sure.  Heri might know.

An interesting observation Albertini.  Question is, when Matt did the first check at 9pm did he walk along the walkway or just listen from the other side of the wall which I suspect is the case?

Why did GM feel the need to recheck the children a mere minutes later?

I suspect this as well. After all Mr O'Brian didn't have to stick his ear on the shutter to hear his daughter.
I reckon that in statements, among the sense organs, there's a tendency to privilege the eye in relation to the ear. We use our ears a lot, to cross a street for instance. And, though our nose has limited capacities, we use it (yesterday I smelt the smoke before actually seeing it). In the quietness of the night Mr Oldfield and Mr O'Brian would have heard the flapping of the curtain if they, by chance, had missed its movement.
This would have been interesting to reconstruct. At what point in the parking would you hear a child crying and what are the chances to determine from where the crying comes.

Because he wasn't happy with just an ear to a shutter.  The recognised time tried practice of many hotels and holiday camps was not sufficient for Gerry.  He immediately got up from the table  and checked properly; he went into the bedroom and made a visual check.

Matt must have realised this.  He may have felt Gerry was not pleased.  He may have felt criticized when Gerry immediately got up and rechecked.    ... and the next time, he made sure he went in and visually checked .... unhappily not Madeleine.

That around 9.05pm, the interviewee went to the area of the apartments. Notably to the area near the windows of all the children's bedrooms. That he did not hear any noise. That he considered that all the children were sleeping. That all the children's bedroom windows were closed, notably the windows that gave access to the bedroom occupied by Madeleine."
. That after this check, he returned to the restaurant, saying that all the children were asleep. However, Gerry, Madeleine's father, went to the area of the apartments to check for himself if the children were asleep. That Gerry would have entered  into his apartment and that he checked to make sure that Madeleine and the twins were sleeping in their bedroom, where it was quite dark. The bedroom door was left open [ajar]. That five minutes later, Gerry came back to the group in the restaurant.

In answer to a question from the inspector, the interviewee says that Gerry will have gone to check at that time because he will not have heard the witness say that he had been there.

Why did Matt go in apartment 5A at his visit after Gerry, at about 9.35 (IIRC)?

Two reasons at least

1.
He went inside because he had offered to do Kate's check for her and that's how she did her check.  It was sorted before he left the table that he would be going inside - in the same way Kate would have done if she had gone.    How anyone can read anything weird or strange into something so simple and straightforward is a mystery to me.

2.

And then despite this, and despite his attempts to make sure he went in the apartment next time as he wasn't happy with his previous check he then thought the room was lighter but did not recall that when he walked past the bedroom window just a few minutes earlier the shutters were up?

If he was trying to make amends and be hyper vigilant why did Matt not think when he thought it was lighter in the bedroom of 5A

"were the shutters up when i walked past" or "i cant remember the shutters being up best go check again round the front".

It does not make sense to me first of all that he did not notice the shutters up walking to the next apartment and then recalling this when he thought the bedroom was lighter than his own if "He may have felt criticized when Gerry immediately got up and rechecked."

So that there can be NO DOUBT about whether Madeleines window was visible to the tapas 9 walking the walled path back to their apartments, see Gerry walking it.

Starts 6.50, see Matts front door, others are in that lobby too, but do not show in the clip.  All the other tapas members peeled off into that lobby.  They had NO SIGHT of THE window.

Gerry carried on.  He had to walk to the end ~ a dead end where the front door was set back in a deep recess.  En route he passed two windows to Matts flat, then Madeleines window, before the front door

So that myth put to bed

Not one of them, apart from Kate and Gerry, was able to see the window, or the door, when walking that walled pathway, in either direction. FACT

But they may have well before getting anywhere near the wall, unless you are suggesting they had their heads down or did not look anywhere except straight towards the entrance to the lobby whilst walking across the car park

Thanks for that, because if you look at 6:57-6:58 where the photographers are at the other side of the car park wall you will see there is a clear view across the car park to the window from the roadside pavement.

So we can now dismiss the myth that the tress blocked the view!

In relation to the angle and seeing the window it's the same issue as previously mentioned. You are presuming that people would simply teleport from the road to their door without walking across the car park first where they would have full view.

No one is arguing at the point of being at the wall they might not be able to see 5A's door or window but they have to get there first, at which point they will be able to see as they walk across that car park and back.

And now thanks to your clip we can see that they would be able to see from the pavement on the road at the other side of the car park as well!

You are wrong about this as Gerry was not in the  habit of visually checking his children. He only did listening checks up until that last night. And the only reason he says he did a visual was because he saw the door a bit more open. This has been posted umpteen times. His wife suggests in the same documentarywhere he made that comment that she did the same.

Second para
Wrong again, if Matt felt bad he would have done a full visual but he didnt, instead he glanced into the room from a few feet away and then wondered where Madeleine slept? Why did he wonder that? Why not look in? he knew where the kids bedroom was. Why go and peruse the parents bedroom to see if she was there? whats all that nonsense about?

matt was right up to the window, a foot away, so inside the wall not outside it, just for info, this is from his statement

Eta is got me thinking. if anyone passed the child out of the window the reciever will have had to be inside the wall as being outside out was too far away, physically unlikely,to faciliate the passing of a four yr old child, so the receiver will have had to walk down the path of the walled area to the window and then back along again, increasing chances of being seen!

Be realistic, Red.  Matt had gone into the apartment .  He could see all three beds thru that partially opened doorway.  He saw the twins, but Madeleine was tucked up at the other end of her bed out of sight.  He could see from the bottom of her bed that there was no movement and assumed that Madeleine was asleep.  The same as all of us would have assumed.

Had he opened the bedroom door properly and gone in, he would have risked waking them with the extra light beaming in.  He did what all of us would have done.

According to his 10th of May statement Gerry wasn't even aware Oldfield had listened at his shutters .

Another point. In Oldfield's first statement he claims :

' That the last to arrive at the restaurant was the couple David and Fiona. That the latter arrived at the restaurant at around 9pm.

That around 9.05pm, the interviewee went to the area of the apartments.'

So if Oldfield left the tapas bar five minutes after the Payne's arrived how could he have gone to 'chivvy them up' ? No wonder Dianne Webster categorically denied seeing him.

The points made by the Police officer to JT re different people having different memories is applicable to everyone.

Jez Wilkins JT and GM all gave their own recollections - and as the Police Officer explained, the fact that they did not all give identical descriptions would be considered normal by the Police.

Had JT said she saw them standing at the top of the road and Gerry had said he was talking to Jez outside the OC entrance - then that would have been suspicious, but a difference of 2/3 metres would not have been considered to be suspect.      Even though Jez and Gerry didnt see JT - she could not have known Gerry was talking to Jez and go on to correctly describe the approximate place where they were standing unless she had seen them there.

The same goes for discrepancies in statements.  The police would not expect statements from 9 people to all be exactly the same.   In fact that would be more likely to arouse suspicion, as it would suggest collusion.
IMO

Nonsense again Benice.

If three witness give statements and two of those witnesses say the same thing then the police will, quite rightly, presume those two witnesses to be correct.  The curious thing about Loach's 'documentary' was firstly that Jez's testimony with regard to the which side of the road issue was never introduced, which made it look as if it was merely Gerry's word against Tanners, thus obscuring the reality and secondly that Gerry's recollection was used over Tanner/Wilkins.

Gerry knew that it wasn't credible that Tanner could have passed by himself and Wilkins without either of them seeing her so he invited a scenario which was credible.

And to your other point, Tanner had the whole of the night before giving her statement on the 4th to be briefed with regard to the Gerry/Wilkins conversation. It is obvious from the timeline given to the police on the 10th, and which the whole group contributed to, that Gerry, at first, was going to go with he/Tanner/Wilkins all being on the same side of the road. I can only assume that the disbelief expressed by the detectives with regard to this scenario in his 10th May interview made him change his 'recollection'.

If Gerry wanted to tell a lie he would simply have said he HAD seen JT. Job done.

As for JT having the whole night to be briefed - by whom and when?   She didn't get back to the table until after Gerry had returned after his chat with Jez at about  9.20ish - and as soon as she'd finished her main course she rushed off to take over from Russell so that he could have his meal.   She didn't return to the table at all after that and she didn't see Gerry again until after she had told the GNR what she had seen and was then taken to see the PJ in 5a.

Don't forget it wasn't just Jane who would need to be briefed - so would everyone else so that they could lie about her leaving the table and when she returned etc etc. and anyway wasn't Gerry busy wandering round PdL at the time looking for somewhere to dispose of his dead daughter?    Russell wasn't at the table from 9.30 until around 10 to 10 - so who briefed him - and when?

It doesn't matter how you look at it - even if JT and the others did lose their minds and agree to cover for Gerry and Kate, there simply wasn't time to carry out the kind of massive briefing that would be required    Unless you think they took it all in during a quick chat while they were enjoying their meal  - as apparently the bombshell that Madeleine had died and Gerry was going off to get rid of her body, didn't even affect their appetites.

Sorry but the whole idea is ridiculous IMO.

The differing memories of the place recalled by Jez and JT, and GM about where they stood - are not different enough for the police to be concerned about.  They know this happens when several witnesses are involved  - it was the Police Officer who explained that to JT.     The police believed JT's sighting  - probably because there was no possible reason for her to lie.
IMO

I don't think any of the TP7 intentionally covered anything. You can say untruths without intending to cover something that has nothing to do with you.
Don't you see they believed the shutters/window story ? They believed it as those in the UK believed it.
In their place I would have likely believed it as well. During a certain time. I guess Ms Tanner discovered she had been used, when doing the pseudo reconstruction. She possibly started to wonder why or rather preferred the ostrich-like approach.

No it's not unfair Anne.   These are the theories of some sceptics who desperately want people to believe them because they hate the McCanns. That's what isn't fair - and if these scenarios are clearly and obviously impossible - then they need to be rebutted. imo.

If you or anyone else can give me credible reasons why JT would lie about anything that happened that night - and how you think she really spent her evening -   then I would be more than happy to consider them with an open mind.

Please, Benice, cite names and quote individual theories instead of globalizing.
I'm a sceptic and I don't recognize my thoughts in the supposed to be sceptic theories you're making up.
I've nothing against being personally contradicted and criticized, but in general and in the name of impalpable ones I find it unacceptable.

Claptrap Anne.

come on give your theories.  But they must be based on provable facts

We are all waiting

Come on, Anne.  Your turn to show your stuff.  Tell us your theories.  Tell us your reasons.

Good grief Anne it's not that long ago that we discussed the sceptics theory that Gerry was the man the Smith's saw - which involved the claim that Gerry was not at the table at 10.00p.m.       IIRC You posted on that thread and so did Faithlilly defending the theory.

Can you show any proof, of this?

Yes the same proof you have that she was abducted.

Yes the same proof you have that she was abducted.
Some indications of an abduction, to remind you:

1)  History: Three abductions of little blond haired girls in just over two and a half years.  All within about 18 miles from PdL.  Same period of time, same locality
2)  A golden witness, Jane Tanner
3)  Mrs Caroline Carpenters audio witnessing
4)  Lies by Amaral, or his crew, to try and get Gerry to confess
5)  The ?deliberate promotion of Eddie and Keela as having proven the case.  Totally untrue
6)  Previous Fitting up of Leonor and Joao with NO EVIDENCE.  Just a story invented by Amaral and Cristovao.
7)  History and Character of Gerry and Kate.  No lies, very reserved approach.  Not like Karen Matthews who was so widely acclaimed by the [ censored word].  Yeah ... RIGHT !
8)  5A = Perfect spot.  Totally hidden front door, in darkness with no one passing.
9)  watchers in the days before hand
10) Previous very recent burglaries in same block using a key
11) No motive for the Mccanns to do it
12) Very obvious disinformation re Kate and Gerry, put about.  Similar to disinformation and lies put about about Leonor Cipriano
13)  Means to do it.  None.  No car.
14)  Opportunity to do it .  None.  Watched all the time  ... or presence at relevant time witnessed by others
15) Indications they have done it.  None.  loving parents
16)  A very plausible trail to a certain place and a certain person.  Now there is room for errors here, but I dont think so, cos other things which I cannot repeat atm, ex judicy possibly, fit totally.

yep, it was an adbduction, alright ... cos i have a further two reasons that I cannot give (ex judicy) + a most unusual outlining verification via an unexpected source

I understand sadie that you have a desperate need to make yourself seem more important in this case than you actually
are but it's all getting rather tedious now so with the greatest respect will you either give up or shut up.

You really want these again?  Jeez you are a sucker for punishment

1)  Joana Cipriano Sept 2004. a pretty 7 year old  [ I have been assured from someone in PT, who should know, that despite her photographs appearing different, she is a fair haired girl.   Cos i challenged it.]  This was just over two and a half years before Madeleine went missing and ONLY 7 miles away at Figueira.  Went there briefly.

2)  Carolina Santos Xmas day 2006.  another very pretty 3 year old abducted from outside her parents cafe / bar in Silves, as she played alone on the pavement.  She was discovered being walked off by a man.  She was some considerable distance away when the abduction was frustrated ... by her parents suddenly realising she had gone and calling her back.  That was UNDER 5 MONTHS before Madeleine was stolen and only about 18 miles away.

3) Madeleine Mccann, May 3rd 2007, aged nearly 4, from PdL .  A pretty blond /fair haired little girl

All these abductions happened in an area of about 18 miles across in a period of under 3 years.  No other pre pubescent stranger abductions in the whole of mainland PT.  PT has a land mass about 2/3 of Englands IIRC

So 3 abductions in one tiny 17 mile corner of the Algarve in under 3 years.  None, of the same type, anywhere else in mainland PT

I am not about to change the thrust of this thread.  I have answered your question Red, but it has all been gone over and over before.  Kindly leave it now and accept my list .. or challenge something else if you feel reason ... or urge to.

I can assure you that by PT standards she was a fair haired girl.  Told to me by a PT man with close connections.  Perhaps blond was not the correct word. but fair haired was.  This man liked blonds/fair haired peeps amongst his younger victims.

Rene Hasse was a sweet faced blond too.  6 years old and his abduction was just 18 miles away from PdL on the atlantic coast.

This mans victims otherwise were in the Porto area exclusively and were all in the 11 to 15 year old age group.  This was in the 1990's in an area of 32 miles across, with the exception of Rene.  The early victims were mainly boys and mainly latin in looks.
The little girl victim up there. Claudia Alexandre Silva e Sousa, aged 7, was also fair haired / blonde

Every two years, on average, he took a new victim.

No other pre-pubescent child abductions by strangers in the whole of mainland PT

A man was taken in and ?charged in about 1999 up in the North.   There was a forum post which asked about how this man, the son of an elite, could have got off his arrest (charge? IIRC) with just a warning from the PJ.  Someone extraordinarily important must have interceded, or some blackmail/ bribery must have taken place, it seems.

As soon as i mentioned it on the internet, the forum post was whooshed.  However another poster called catkins saw a similar mention

Carolina Santos was abducted, but only for a short time.

Now leave it Red.  This is the wrong thread and with your questions and false claims, you have taken it off course.
