This week a police officer was tried, judged, condemned to a suspended sentence of prison that will not allow him to work for a long time if ever, dismissed from the force without a pension to feed his minor kids, because during a persecution and while firing at the air, one of his shots fatally killed one of the armed burglars.

I don't agree with the use of force by the police, NEVER, but there are times when I cannot accept that such argument can be used by the suspects or accused to file complaints, mostly false, because they know that most of the times they will have a privileged attendant in the Court System - as happened with Leonor Cipriano until she was found the liar that she is, and many alike.

Jean-Charles Menezes is another good example.

In Portugal, any policeman who injures or kills another person, whether it be a suspect, a fugitive or known criminal, whether it be with a gun, a car, etc. is systematically investigated and often tried in court. In one case, a bank robber who was leaving the bank holding a hostage with a gun to her head, was shot dead by a member of a SWAT team. The Ministério Público wanted to bring murder charges against the policeman but later dropped the charges.

You must keep in mind that Portugal had lived 48 years under a Fascist regime during which torture was a common practice against politicial opponents. Because of this, the laws are very lenient when it comes to protecting potential criminals and there so many safeguards that often guilty people go free. , Very often people confuse aggression with torture. If the police do beat up a suspect, they don't get away with it.

As for the Leonor Cipriano case, the investigation was badly done. First of all, the evidence of the photograph should never have been allowed, in accordance with Portugese law, because it was a digital photo which could have easily been photoshopped. Secondly, the person who first brought up the case, Marinho e Pinto, made himself an "assistente" in the case, so that he could not be questioned in court about the photo and the info he had obtained. Very strange.

With regard to the Cipriano case Luz, - IIRC you said her injuries were sustained when she was beaten up in prison.    If that is true can you explain why PJ officers would then decide to dispute that - and claim that those injuries were actually sustained at their own police station, saying she fell down the stairs in a suicide attempt.   With the best will in the world - that doesn't make any sense - as it would be appear to be a totally unnecessary claim to make if it was proved the injuries had been sustained elsewhere.

The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.

The only reason people like you are interested in this case is to attack Amaral.

Otherwise you would never had given it the time of day.

Then you complain when people look at Redwoods past record in the Jill Dando case..................

It could be that she sustained minor injuries when she tried to commit "suicide" and then she still got beaten up in the prison by the other inmates.

I have made no posts about the Jill Dando case - only about your repetitive posts bringing up that case at every opportunity, whilst at the same time repeatedly posting ... 'What has this got to do with the McCann case'...... if anyone else mentions another case.

Remarks such as ... 'People like you' ....are both rude and uncalled for.

It seems to me Stephen that your only purpose here is to snipe and sneer at other posters - that's when you're not sniping and sneering at the McCanns of course.    You do this forum no favours IMO.

Thanks Montclair, I didn't use that because I believe it is still a cause for shame. I understand that mistakes can be made, but murders cannot.

And as you say, our not so recent, but within a lifetime experience with dictatorship laws, have made our country too lenient with thieves and very harsh with those that have the duty to apply the law on the streets.

As a citizen, I frequently rebel against certain measures that our police are obligated to apply, for instance in public demonstrations, but from afar I pity them for having to be there when probably they would fit better behind the barricades.

In what concerns the McCann, they were treated as innocent victims, without any proof in their favour, when any police force in the world would have treated them, from the start, as possible/potential suspects.
What the police, the Portuguese Government and the population are taking now from the British Media, is just the result for not having acted as they should have in face of a crime.

In this case crime pays.

Of course you will say that.

YOU DEFEND THE MCCANNS TO THE HILT.

Hence why you want me removed.

However, I won't tolerate your nonsense.

Dear Benice,

I owe you no explanation when you choose to select the news that serve your prejudiced opinion.

Leonor was in Faro Police headquarters, in the company of her lawyer, when she confessed to the murder. After that confession she asked to go to the WC. When coming from there, she passed a staircase from where she attempted a jump, but meanwhile made  enough noise to be assisted by a police clerk (the one accused initially of false reporting).
Her lawyer was there, why didn't she file charges immediately and waited until Mr. Marinho Pinto published photoshoped pics, taken more than a week after she was attacked in the prison by her inmates?

In any case it doesn't matter any more. She was proven a liar in a Court Trial and condemned for it.

Maybe you should ask yourself why Aragão Correia, the one that started all this disgusting process, the reason he fled Portugal and is now in Brazil making Parapsychology courses and advertising himself as a psychic.

Tavares

The police chief, still a serving officer despite being convicted in January of torturing a crime suspect and receiving a two and a half suspended jail sentence.
For those keen to discredit Tavares de Almeida and Sousa Amaral
