Just about the only thing that sticks in my mind from one of Heido-ho's dreadful videos was a proud boast of a (US) dog handler that his dog would find a tear-drop on a US football pitch (considerably larger than European football pitches) in 5 minutes.

I remember being very unimpressed.

If cadaver dogs are really that sensitive, why aren't they alerting every 5 minutes all the time?

The problem with that argument is it quickly becomes "you can't have your cake and eat it"
A quick glance at this forum shows enough dog posts to paper a few walls and what has been the result?
A few pundits on here effectively trying to tell the RCMP, FBI, US Forces, Uncle Tom Cobley and a few more others that they are wasting their time with dogs. Think of all the money they could have saved on research if only they had the wit to look in here. Do you think those listed would believe you and others on this forum? Roll about laughing more like.

There is nothing wrong -- and a very great deal right -- with dogs properly deployed.

One (rotten!) example doesn't make a precedent.

If you study your wallpaper closely … you will see that the consensus on this forum is about the excellence of all degrees of properly trained properly deployed working dogs of all types.

Jolly good so we agree properly trained and properly deployed dogs "is good". So why all the song and dance about "these particular dogs" then?
Obviously I do not wish to draw an erroneous conclusion from what you have said which rather does leave something hanging in the air so let's have it straight out then eh?

The deployment of the dogs in Praia da Luz anticipated a very different discipline in an entirely different sphere.

And no.

I shan't expand.

Did the dogs find anything evidential?

The fact that the dog's failed to find any physical evidence is no fault of the dog's....just the absence of any physical evidence

But of course the fact that they found no evidence is neither here nor there as these dogs obviously have the more sensitive instruments then modern day forensic techniques... Especially after the dogs went in a significant time after the May 3rd so its hard to draw any conclusions either way from no foresnsics found don't you think?

Although I was under the impression that some forensics were found and I know some forensics even got contaminated when sent to UK for anyalsis? Although whether that was recovered because of the dog alerts I do not know...

Like your esteemed colleague you are giving the question a body swerve by making an irrelevant comment.
But really the question is his/her/its to answer not yours unless of course you know what he/she/it was thinking or you are one and the same person.
Oh silly me! of course you know being omniscient and all.

Please give a cite for contamination occurring at FSS.

No one is rubbishing the dogs  as I am concerned.....but Grime has told us that the alerts do not confirm cadaver odour...that's it

You are right it seems to be a question of a blame game between the Portuguese and FSS. So small samples were obviously collected but as all know were deemed inconclusive.

Purely from the memory I seem to remember the lead detective talking about this in his documentary.

They were ruled out as irrelevant.

Nothing inclonclusive at all ...

He also spoke about it in his book.

Ah ok. So we have dogs alerting in the apartment and suprisingly in the couples car they rented 2-3 weeks after the event. I also remember from the documentary that a witness saw the car boot open all night for several days according to the detective. Is there any other verification of this and if so do we think this is normal behaviour?
