Kate describes events surrounding the disappearance of a dearly loved child in her book.  I suppose it is a matter of opinion whether or not that could be described as a moment of great distress.  I know what I think and I have had a fair inkling of your thoughts on the matter for quite some time.

It is clear that Kate's descriptions include criticising those around her. Mrs Fenn has a plummy voice and her reaction to the events is seen by Kate as casual and unconcerned. A British woman 'smells of cigarettes' and is 'quite drunk'. The GNR officers were 'bewildered and out of their depth'. I can understand why she wanted understanding, sympathy and action at the time, but I have difficulty understanding why she was still complaining four years later.

Do you suppose this could be part of Holly's greater plan to get us all singing from the same hymn sheet?

Is that her plan?

Quite, but I get entertainment, whereas I doubt you can claim the same.  ?{)(**
That makes you a really lovely person - not.  IMO.

What annoys me is hypocrisy and unfairness.  Either we should all be able to take the piss out of each other and rub each other up the wrong way unhindered by mods, their arbitrary rulings and word censors, or the rules should be applied fairly and squarely to all, and on every occasion.

There's something in this. Holly's get out of jail card was 'well don't read my posts then', which is sort of against the general ethos of a forum. You can't wrap anything up in this convenient caveat.
I'm not particularly arsed about the gentle piss taking, but the whole book thing was funny the first couple of times, but got old really quickly.
Incidentally, not all scousers say 'book', it's actually more the previous generation - and not all of them pronounce 'oo' the same consistently - and it's pretty prevalent across the north, so there you go.

I left the north of England (not Liverpool) in 1968, but people still comment on my accent, particularly when I say book, cook or look.

In my opinion she wrote it as she saw it and as she experienced it at the time.  The whole truth as it happened and as she saw it happening and as recorded in the diary she kept.  Unfortunately the passage of time did not make her trauma any the less ... one only has to listen to the personal accounts of the parents of other missing children whose lives and that of their families have been shaped by that one single event to know the truth of that.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

Accents interest me because I'm trying to teach Spanish to 4 people at the moment.

I know a little about the pronunciation that varies from Spanish speaker to Spanish speaker, so my students can lisp or not, as they choose.

As to British accents, I would have thought plummy suggests Oxford, or having been brought up to talk posh, like wot my better half woz.

If this matter is any way important, do we have a background for Mrs Fenn?

She certainly did, although her diary didn't include the various criticisms I posted.

Do you understand that Kate was writing a book about her personal experiences, and that for such a book to be detailed, colourful and entertaining it needs to include observations, thoughts and feelings?  Does she ONLY criticise people she comes into contact with or does she have nice words for some people too, words that you have chosen not to include in your little round up above?

Not much, other than that she lived in Stratfield Saye, Berkshire before moving to Portugal.  Difficult to discern where Mrs Fenn was from...
